Miss I. E. Crutch leaves during the week-end for Auckland where she will join the Niagara en route to Sydney. Miss D. Monaghan, Auckland, is visiting her mother Mrs. F. P. Monaghan. Mrs. France, Auckland, arrived during the week and is the guest of her sister, Mrs. Leslie Hamilton, Manutahi. Miss N. Good has returned to Tariki after spending several weeks at Hawera. Miss P. France, who is to be a bridesmaid at the Coleman—Hawken wedding on Easter Saturday, arrived during the week and is the guest of her aunt, Mrs. L. Hamilton, Manutahi. Mrs. A. S. Tonks, who has been the guest of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. S. C. Tonks, for several weeks, returned to Hamilton during the week. Miss Murdoch was hostess at two tables of bridge on Monday evening. Miss K. O’Sullivan, Matapu, left on Thursday for Wanganui, where she is the guest of Mrs. R. C. Laurence. Mrs. S. C. Tonks and Miss Tonks, who accompanied Mrs. A. S. Tonks on her return to Hamilton during the week, are expected to return home in a few days. Mrs. W. M. Bell, Hamilton, arrived last week and is staying with her daughter, Mrs. J. Exley. Mrs. G. A. Mrs. Cottrell sen., Manaia, who has been spending a holiday as the guest of Mrs. Jack Cottrell, Mountain Road, Normanby, has returned home. Wearing a pretty frock of cornflower blue mattalasse with silver lame finishings, Mrs. R. J. O’Dea entertained, a few friends at tea on Wednesday afternoon, Mesdames H. H. Bramwell, W. Jobson, R. S. Hay bittie, G. C. Pickett, B. J. McCarthy and C. Whittington being those present. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Duckworth, Melbourne, accompanied by their two daughters, who are on an extended visit to New Zealand, have returned to Hawera after a fortnight’s visit to Helensville and Te Aroha, and are the guests of Mr. Duckworth’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Duckworth at their Ohawe beach cottage.

On Thursday evening the club bridge circle held a contract evening in the bridge-room, organised by Mrs. H. G. Whitehead. The players present were Mesdames A. Evans, P. O. Veale, O. K. Tennent, H. G. Whitehead, G. Mann, J. Y. Hall, W. Jobson, R. Wylie, Misses Symes, D. Richardson, I. E. R. McLean, I. M. Glenn and a visitor, Miss Gilchrist. To celebrate the coming-of-age of their son Roland, Mr. and Mrs. P. Henry entertained a number of friends at their home at Matapu recently, dancing, games and competitions passing an enjoyable evening. Monte Carlo numbers were won by Mr.- and Mrs. G, Preece, and Miss G. Nicholas and Mr. R. Treweek. Mr. Poole, Miss F. . Nicholas and Mr. Tong were the winners of three novelty competitions. Mrs. Henry received her guests wearing a smartly-cut frock of black windswept velvet. When Mrs. G. A Burgess . was “at home” to her friends on Tuesday afternoon the guests at tea included Mesdames K Kirk (New Plymouth), Naughton (Wellington), Baigent (Tauranga), G. A. Duncan, O. K. Tennent, A. K. North, A. M. Winks, W. W. Gibson and Misses D. Richardson and M. Tennent. Large bowls of dahlias made bright patches of colour in the room and Mrs. Burgess, who wore a gown of commander blue mousseline silk, with pale champagne vestee, was assisted at tea by Miss Eva Burgess, whose frock was fashioned in brown and white crepe fleurita, with a white neck-fall.

At the closing day of the Hawera Park Croquet Club on Tuesday afternoon there was a splendid attendance of members and visitors for the presentation of trophies and prizes won during the past year. On Wednesday afternoon, Mrs. C. J. Hawken was hostess at a pleasant afternoon at her home in Mokoia when the young friends of her daughter, Mary, were entertained at tea, and the guests were shown Miss Hawken’s trousseau and many little gifts received from recent parties. The hostess -welcomed her guests wearing % robe of black chiffon velvet relieved with a cream vest. Miss Mary Hawken was frocked in fawn sand crepe, with knife pleated trimmings, and Miss Mickey Hawken’s frock was of green floral silk. The yojung hostess chose a basqued frock, with skirt of light navy and tri-coloured top of red, white and blue pattern. The individual flag prize was won by Miss Lovell. . Others present were Mrs. N. There was a splendid attendance at the Women’s Club on Monday for the music circle’s April evening. An entertaining programme, arranged by Miss C. Reilly, was presented, those contributing items being Mrs. G. A. Duncan and Mrs. P. O. Veale, piano duos on two pianos; Misses Kemp, M. Mackie (Otakeho), and Mrs. W. W. Gibson, vocal solos; Miss C. Reilly and Mrs. Gibson, vocal duets; Miss Mackie, piano solos (including as a recall number a composition of Mr. Frank Hutchens). Miss W. Knight gave an interesting and descriptive talk on the art of miming and movement, exacting illustrations of various points from members of the audience, with unexpected and amusing results. The club choir under Mrs. P. O. Veale’s conductorship gave two part songs. Mesdames A. M. Young, G. A. Duncan and Miss Reilly were the accompanists. Miss Reilly and Mrs. A. Evans thanked the visiting performers. Those present included Miss Constance Reilly, circle convener (a deep blue and black paisley silk crepe, with fine pleated trimmings), Mrs. P. O.
