AIRPORT BUILDINGS

NEW PLYMOUTH PLANS PROVISION FOR EXTENSIONS. ON ROUTE OF MAIN SERVICES. BOARD LOOKING TO FUTURE.

Plans for up-to-date buildings at the New Plymouth airport at Bell Block in view of the proposed New Zealand trunk and trans-Tasman air mail services were approved by the airport board last night. It is not intended to proceed with the work at present but the existing hangar will be moved to the new site close to Te Arei Road, 30 chains from Devon Road. A “lay-out” had been prepared, said Mr. A. F. Sandford, chairman, for the block of buildings that would be required, including office buildings, control tower and revolving beacon in the centre and hangar and workshop buildings, capable of extension, on each side. The office buildings would provide for the internal trunk air service, the transpacific service, mail and telegraph facilities and waiting room. The layout had been prepared to allow for extension at any time.

It was not proposed to build in concrete as development was continually being made. The site proposed was not in the way of any usual runway and was close to the main road. The board decided to call tenders for the removal of the present hangar to the new site.

Mr. Sandford reported on what had been done with regard to the moving of telegraph and power lines and the improvement of the sward on the airport. Those present were Mr. A. E. Sandford (chairman), the Hon. J. McLeod, and Messrs. C. Hannan, T. P. Anderson, J. Brown and S. E. Nielson (secretary).
