GAY SETON IN FORM

GOOD GALLOP AT TE RAPA LADY KYRA’S GOOD PROGRESS. BIG DOOK IS PROMISING. (By “Hurry On.”) Gay Seton, who is one of the fancied candidates far the Easter mile at Ellerslie, lost none of his admirers by the manner in which he galloped seven furlongs at Te Rapa on Tuesday morning in lm 31s. This was the best gallop of the morning and demonstrates that Gay Seton 5s in great order. Working Well. Lady Kyra did not race up to expectations at New Plymouth in February, after which she was treated to a short spell. Since resuming active work she has made considerable progress. Her recent efforts on the track have been most attractive and she is sure to carry support in the Okoari Handicap tomorrow.

Jonathan’s Condition. According to a Wanganui report Jonathan appears to be throwing off the trouble that came against him last spring. Galloping about the paddocks he appears to move freely, and hopes are entertained that this brilliant customer may again be seen on the race track. He is to be taken in hand again next month, and the chances are that if he goes on satisfactorily he will be taken to Australia.

Where is She Going? One of the puzzles of the moment is where is Cuddle going' to race at Easter. She was nominated for the Wairarapa meeting last Wednesday, was accepted for both the C.J.C. Easter and Autumn Handicaps on Friday, and on the same evening was. nominated! for Feilding. It would not have been so surprising to find her thus freely engaged if there was a different handicapper for each meeting, but Mr. J. E. Henrys does the assessments for all three fixtures. She does not seem to be too favourable a prospect for her Riccarton weights, at least for the Great Easter, but it is still quite feasible that she will be there. She could race at either Feilding or Tauherenikau, where the main event on the opening day (Saturday) comes on at about 1 p.m., and then connect with that evening’s boat south, which would! mean some quick travelling, though she would have all day Sunday to get over it.

Failed at Washdyke. Imperial Spear’s two races in the south last week may indicate that he is training off at present. He was not disgraced at'Waimate, but he failed at the wrong end, and he was even more disappointing at Washdyke. He will need to improve on these showings’to be a Great Autumn prospect. .

Not Going North. A Christchurch report states that though the final payment was made for Variant in the Oaks and) St. Leger at Ellerslie, neither this filly nor her stable mate Hostess is likely to make the .trip north. They will probably do their Easter racing at Riccarton. z . First Defoe Winner.

. Finnesko, who won the juvenile event on the second day at Pahiatua, is the first of the progeny of the Hurry On sire Defoe to win. Several others are showing pace and a filly at Hastings, Peggy Defoe, is expected to win a race before - long. '

Likely Sort. Big Dook, who won a double at Pahiatu, is by Colossus from that fair performer Queens Up. He won both his races in decisive fashion. As he can both carry weight and stay he should be capable of holding his own in open company.

Returning to Form. The former Stratford horse Sea Fox is reported to be in great order at present. He had not had a race since last Christmas until he contested the Timaru Cup on Saturday, states a southern writer, but he made a bold showing for the greater part of the" journey, and in the circumstances it is reasonable to expect him to race prominently during the Easter meeting. He figures among the first acceptors for the Great Easter and Great Autumn Handicaps, and as he has not been nominated for any of the minor events he is a likely runner, in both big races. Candidates for Riccarton.

l At Trentham last Saturday Princess Doreen and: Might, Trentham’s two candidates for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Great Easter and Autumn double, pleased a trial on the plough over seven furlongs, which they ran in Im 30 l-ss, the last half-mile in 525. Princess Doreen was two lengths clear at the half-mile and still further opened the gap at the top of the straight, but with a characteristic burst over the last furlong Might reached within half a length of her at the post.
