THE FINAL TRIALS

WORK AT NEW PLYMOUTH GOOD EFFORT BY REFRESHER. ORAPAI AND LADY KYRA. •As a result of heavy rain overnight the tracks at New Plymouth were on the heavy side fox- the work yesterday morning, though not nearly as soft as might have been expected. A shower shortly after work commenced did' not improve the going, but the tracks were drying after breakfast. All the galloping was done on the course proper with the flags well out. Nearly all the horses with engagements to-morrow were worked and there were some interesting trials. Chief Marionette was given an easy working gallop over a mile. She moved freely and ■pulled up well. She caused her trainer some anxiety early in the week but is now doing well again. A solid effort was registered by Refresher, who always had the measure of Merry Way over five furlongs in the smart time of Im ss. Refresher carried out his task in good style. The Tiger was restricted to a couple of rounds of good half-pace work on the inside grass. He was responsible for a good gallop on Wednesday morning, when he ‘ reeled off five furlongs in Im 3’As in good style. A big improvement on her recent displays was given by Amyril when she finished in front of Tahurangi at the conclusion of five furlongs in lm 7s. This gallop took place immediately after a shower and was a better effort than the time indicates.

Treasure Hunt and Sporting Song did easy work on the inside. The latter pleased on Wednesday morning by covering half a mile in 52%5. The conditions appeared to suit* Gold Mission, who beat Ringside over five furlongs'in lm 6s, and carried out her task in an attractive fashion. -Ngareta was schooled again, giving a first-class display over eight fences. She was rather tired at the finish.

Following the breakfast interval the first to work was Windsoreen, who had been brought in from Inglewood by motor-float. She galloped half a mile smoothly in 555. She looks in good order. Davistock and Aussie Ra were always going well over seven furlongs, the last six taking lm 23 4-ss. They kept together all the way and finished very solidly. , Kaola alone ran the same distance, taking lm 22 3-5 s for the last six furlongs. He did his task well, ' appearing to relish the going. Lady Kyra and Orapai were practically on terms at the conclusion of five furlongs in lm ss—a good gallop. Lady Kyra was about half a length in front in the early stages but Orapai finished well. It was an attractive effort by both horses. Joy Box showed her usual pace over half a mile in 53 3-ss, but she had -had enough at the finish. Golden Rill and High Test covered tw-o furlongs in 26 2-ss, both moving well.

Cereal was scratched for the Ngaharu Handicap at 3.15 p.m. yesterday.
