OPENING OF BAZAAR

LABOUR PARTY’S EFFORT.

WEATHER AFFECTS ATTENDANCE.

Despite the unfavourable weather there was a fair attendance at the opening of the New Plymouth Labour Party’s bazaar at the Workers’ Social Hall last night. The hall and the stalls were gaily decorated with streamers and balloons and the stage with large bowls of flowers and tree ferns.

It was evident from the excellent array of wares on the stalls that the bazaar had been well organised and stocked by the promoters. The fancy . goods and the children’s clothes sections were worthy of special attention. The president of the New Plymouth branch introduced the Mayor, Mr. E. R. C. Gilmour, who officially opened the bazaar. Mr. Gilmour congratulated the ladies on the splendid array of work and expressed the hope that the stalls would be patronised by the public of New Plymouth.

Miss Elwyn Riley’s pupils gave exhibitions of tap dancing. Songs were sung by Miss MacDonald and Messrs. A. Wright, A. Howlett and L. King. Two little girls,- Joan Shotter and Mabel Faulkner, gave elocutionary items, and Messrs. Wright and Draper led community singing. The bazaar will be continued to-night, when the preliminary pulls of the tug-of-war competition will take place. In the afternoon the convener was Mrs. P. R. Draper. The stall-holders were: Fancy sewing, Mesdames W. Falconer and W. S. Oakley; plain sewing, Mesdames E. Fraser and W. J. Batten; cakes, Mesdames R. Rae and A. W. James; sweets and soft drinks, Mrs. T. Crone and Misses K. Batten, J. Batten and R. Draper; novelty, Mesdames P. Wilmshurst and A. Revell; af terne on tea, Mrs. S. Curzon; vegetables, Mesdames J. Wall, W. Ramsdale and A. C. Stock ley; competitions, Mesdames N. Leon and E. F. Frith.

The attraction at the bazaar to-night will be a big tug-of-war carnival. The committee has been fortunate in receiving nominations from the best teams in Taranaki. The following teams have signified their - intention of competing: Haupoto, Pepperells, Makahu, Sea Dogs, Normanby, Taurangi, Waipapa, Diamonds, West End and Watersiders. These teams have been in hard training, and it is confidently expected that the public will see some exciting pulls. The preliminary heats of this contest will be pulled to-night and the finals on Saturday night. The Maori string band will be in attendance, supported by a number of Maori artists. A challenge pull between the Diamonds and the West End teams for the challenge cup at present held by Diamonds will also take place.

In addition to these attractions the stalls are loaded with bargains.

On Friday at 3 p.m. a baby show will be held, and good prizes are provided for the three classes advertised.
