PARK CROQUET CLUB

SUCCESSFUL SEASON ENDED. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The official closing and presentation of trophies of the Park Croquet Club was held on Tuesday afternoon. Among the visitors were the Mayoress of Hawera (Mrs, J. E. Campbell) and Mrs. B. C. Bennett who presented the trophies and congratulated the winners on their success. During the. afternoon golf croquet was won by Mrs. W. Dowden and “merry-go-round” by Mrs. J. W. J. Harding. In her address to members Mrs. Murdoch expressed her pleasure at the large attendance and welcomed Mrs Campbell and Mrs. Bennett. The club had enjoyed one of its most successful season in club, inter-club, Tait Stars and Campbell and McL’DoWie cup. competitions as well as in friendly games. In play for the New Zealand Council’s silver buttons in South Taranaki, Mrs. J. S. Barrow had won the B grade and Mrs. W. Dowden the C grade final. Both were club members. Mrs. Murdoch thanked the donors of trophies and congratulated the winners and the young players on their fine performances. Thanks also were expressed to all who had assisted the club during the season and helped in its establishment on a very firm footing. The club trophies displayed included the handsome championship shield presented last year by Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Spragg and won jointly this year by Mrs. Harding (in the A grade section) and Mrs. Dowden (in the B grade section), the Exley Cup won by Mrs. Barrow with Mr. J. Exley runner-up and the Bennett and Sutton vaSe won by Mrs. J. Horton with Mrs. Murdoch runner-up. The latter trophy was presented to the winner by Mrs. Bennett on behalf of the donors, with her congratulations and best wishes for the future success of the club. The other trophies were presented by Mrs Campbell, who congratulated the winners. They were: Championship singles (A grade) winner Mrs Harding, runner-up Mrs, Jackson; championship singles’ (B grade) Mrs. Dowden, runnerup Mrs. Henry; Exley Cup (A grade) Mrs. Barrow, runner-up Mr. Exley; Hey rose bowl (for B grade handicap) Mrs. R. Mortlock, runner-up Mrs. Dowden; handicap doubles (A grade) Mrs. Harding, runner-up ' Miss Tait; handicap doubles (B grade) Mrs. Mortlock, run-, ner-up Mrs, T. C. Hobbs; consolation doubles Mrs., Spragg and Mrs. W. O’Brien; honorary members’ points prize, Mrs. W. Rudge; Friday competition specials (A grade) Mrs. Harding, Miss Tait, Mrs. Jackson, jiMrs. Hey and Mrs. Chadwick (2); Friday competition . specials (B grade). Mrs. A. C. Smith (2), Mrs.. Dowden ■ (21 and Mrs. Hobbs. Autumn-tinted posies made by Mrs. Hobbs were presented by Shirley Horton to the Mayoress and Mrs. Bennett and by Barry Harding to Mrs. Murdoch, Mrs. J, Exley (secretary) and Mrs. Chadwick (treasurer)’. Consolation novelties were presented to Mr. G. Grindrod and Mesdames Burnett, Exley, Parkes, Shaw, Martin Smith and G. Harding. At the conclusion of the ceremony cheers were given for the Mayoress and Mrsj. Murdoch’ in declaring the lawns closed for play expressed the hope that all would meet again next season.
