“LIGHTS FARCICAL”

JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

WAITARA COUNCIL DISCUSSION.

OPINIONS OF CR. W. B. GLASGOW.

£5O FOR RELIEF OF DISTRESS.

The opinion that a display decorations on the occasion of the King’s jubilee celebrations early next month would, be farcical was expressed by Cr., W. B. Glasgow at a Waitara Borough Council meeting last night. Although it was explained that arrangements were being made to provide an extra grant for unemployed, the council carried Cr. Glasgow’s proposal that the Mayor be empowered to distribute £5O in relief of distress “as a fitting commemoration” of the jubilee. It was decided to grant employees a holiday on full pay, erect lights and assist any entertainment arranged at Waitara schools. The council considered the circular from the ■ Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, asking for co-operation in suitable observance of the King’s silver .jubilee. ■lt was decided to give all employees a holiday’ on full pay on May 6, to request employers to do likewise, and to erect coloured lights in the street for the week. If it were intended to make any monetary grant, suggested Cr. Glasgow, it should be given to the unemployed. Ch Reeves moved that £lO be allocated to the Waitara State and Convent schools.

'The unemployed would receive a grant from , the Unemployment Board, commented the Mayor, Mr. J. Hine, who said he was inclined to support Cr. Reeves. He was opposed, said Cr. Glasgow, who doubted if ;.the schools would do anything. J He could not say all he would like on the Government’s “cool” allocation Of £5OOO.

The Mayor refused-Cr. Glasgow permission to move an amendment to allocate a different amount for a different purpose, but later.allowed it.

Cr. Glasgow moved that to commemorate the jubilee £5O be granted to the Mayor. to distribute for the relief of distress at Waitara. “Flag-flying and bun-fights and that sort of . thing” would not help people .who were in need of clothes and food. Celebrations were possible only, in large centres. The suggestion of coloured lights was farcical—it was like lighting up a ballroom with no guests, said Cr. Glasgow. He could think of no better way of commemorating the jubilee than in the manner he had suggested. Cr. Spufdle: Is not £5O rather a large sum for this borough to expend?. Cr. Glasgow altered his amendment to leave it open to the Mayor to allocate part to the schools, and the amendment was carried.
