EASTER VACATION
' BROKEN WEEK FOR SHOPS. PROXIMITY OF ANZAC DAY. An exceptionally broken period for Stratford shopkeepers will be experi- ■ enced at Easter, when for five of the seven days following Good Friday, April 19, most of the shops will be closed. This ..position has arisen because of the comparative lateness of Easter this year and the proximity of Anzac Day. As usual the majority of shops will be closed on Good Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, but on this occasion they will also be closed on the following Thursday, .hnzac Day. The' late night will be changed from the Saturday to the previous Thursday, April 18, when no half-holiday will be observed. While such an arrangement is suitable for such • retailers as clothiers, drapers, ironmongers and stationers, vendors of perishable goods will have to make other arrangements. The bakers will close on Good Friday, but will bake bread only •on Saturday, remaining open only for as long' as is considered necessary for the supply of bread. They will not bake oh Easter Monday. Butchers will have a. similar arrangement, being compelled by law to open for part of Saturday morning.- Another exception for part of . the time will be the newsagents, who will open for part of Saturday and Monday mornings. ’' - There have been rumours at Stratford that some retailers wished to open on the Saturday, but from inquiries made . yesterday it seems most unlikely that any such action will be taken. One or two , mentioned that they would have preferred to open on the Saturday mom-' ing, as they expected there would be a. fair amount of business offering at that period of the month, but they also stated definitely that they would not act against: the majority of the retailers. Most retailers were of the opinion that . ' there would be very little business about at Easter.
