POULTRY FEDERATION
FORMATION OF BRANCHES. NEW PLYMOUTH AND WAITARA. J Branches of the New Zealand Poultry Federation were formed at Waitara and New Plymouth on Tuesday after addresses by Mr. G. S. Bates, a member of the New Zealand Poultry Board, who is touring Taranaki in the interests of the egg producers. Mr. L. Cocker, Government instructor in poultry, was also present.
At New Plymouth Mr. W. Scott presided over an attendance of 12 people. In introducing Mr. Bates he stressed the importance of proper organisation. The success of the Poultry Board depended entirely upon the support of the poultry men themselves.
The objects of the meeting were outlined by Mr. L. Cocker, who said he was accompanying Mr. Bates in his attempt to consolidate the poultry producers of Taranaki. He appealed to poultrymen to co-operate and help themselves in getting the best out of the industry. The formation of the board was the foundation of the future of the industry. Poultrymen must unite. ' Mr. Bates, speaking on similar lines to his address at Stratford, which has already been published in the Daily News,
stressed the necessity of consolidating the interests of poultry-keepers in the district and those of the industry throughout the Dominion. The Poultry Board had no executive authority, the present Bill taking away all its previous powers. Its work consisted mainly in making recommendations to the Government departments to bring down the measures it considered necessary. The work of the board on the marketing side could only be put through when backed by a solid body of producers, and for that reason strong branches of the federation were necessary. The board had only one aim, the betterment of the industry, and its efficiency, as Mr. Scott had said, entirely depended on the support it received from the producers. After Mr. Bates had answered a large
variety of questions it was decided on the motion of Mr. E. R. Newell and Mr. G. Blanchard to form a branch of the federation at New Plymouth, and the following were elected an executive with power to add: Messrs. Newell (chairman), W. R. Leyton, D. Peak, Goss, W. Scott, J. Miller and E. J. S. Miller (secretary and treasurer). The annual subscription was fixed at 2s 6d.
Mr. Scott paid a tribute to the work of Mr. Cocker in his capacity as instructor. All would regret his departure for the South Island. At Waitara a committee comprising, Messrs. B. N. Gillespie (chairman); A. W. Johnstone, T. A. Pruden, H. 0. Kettle, and B. E. Dew (secretary) and Mrs. Gillespie was elected.
