KAKARAMEA SPORTS

ENTRIES AND ATTENDANCE FAIR. I. PARSONS WINS OPEN LEAP. Though steady rain, which was very heavy at times, descended during most of yesterday afternoon, there Was a very fair attendance at the, annual sports meeting of the Kakaramea Sports and Agricultural Association held in Mrs. Lord’s paddock at Kakaramea. The edge of the sports arena was lined with cars, in which patrons sought shelter from the rain and watched the progress of the events. In the adverse conditions the officials had a trying time, but they carried the varied programme along very well.

The entries in all sections were well up to the usual standard, there being a big contingent of horses from all parts of South Taranaki and from the Waverley district, and even from as far as Raetihi. There were keen contests in the jumping, trotting, athletic and dancing events. A fine lot of ponies and young dairy stock was shown. The officials upon whom most of the work devolved were Messrs. K. Carmichael (president), J. S. Watt (vice-president) and C. P. Lord (secretary). They were helped by the assistant-secretary, Mr. G. Garriock, and the stewards. J, Hall and G. Meharry. The open leaping competition, carrying with it the association’s challenge cup, was won by I. Parsons’ Tatler. The trophies were on display on the grounds. Mrs. Crocker welcomed the visitors, for whom Mrs. G. H. Meuli replied. > RIVER FLOWS UNDERGROUND. BIG CHANGE IN THE KAPUNf. Some idea of the flood damage in the Kapuni River was gained by two Hawera climbers, Messrs. C. Dingle and G. Brown, who made an ascent of Mount Egmont on Sunday. They found the going good on the scoria on Fantham and the main peaks, but the wind in the crater had frozen the snow surface, making the securing of holds difficult. The descent was made by way of the Stratford side, and the climbers were surprised to see the difference the floods had made in the Manganui Gorge. Although the track was not interfered with, where there had before been rocks and scoria there was a bed of shingle resembling a river bed. Good progress was made to the Kapuni River, where there was a surprise in store when the usual crossing was reached. The flood had scoured out the river bed completely obliterating the track, making it necessary for the climbers to cross below Victoria Falls. They paid a visit to Wilkie’s Pools, but found no water running over the pools as before. What had happened was that the river is now running underground from above the pools, coming out further down.
