VELVIN WINS SEALED HANDICAP.

HAWERA BOWLING CONTESTS. Though weather conditions were against the playing of good bowls, there were some keen contests in the games between the section winners of the Hawera Bowling Club’s Bisox Cup handicap competition played on the club’s green yesterday afternoon. The winner was F. E. Clarke, the club’s secretary, who came through the series unbeaten to defeat D. McCormick, president of the club, by 26 points to 18 in the final game.

Clarke, playing better bowls under adverse conditions, established an early lead and maintained it throughout the game. The games yesterday were played on the two-life system.

Details' are:— First round: McCormick (6) beat M. Squire (1) 19-18; Clarke (5) beat Canning (4) by default. Second round: Canning beat Squire 20-18; Clarke beat McCormick 23-15; Squire eliminated. Third round: Clarke beat Canning 29-15; McCormick a bye; Canning eliminated. Final: Clarke beat McCormick 26-18. The winner of the Bennett and Sutton Cup, a sealed handicap event, was J. W. Velvin, who won it for the first time, with 13 wins. S. R. Veitch, with llj wins, was runner-up, and C. Lovell, with ten wins, was third. The only club competition still to be finalised is the champion pairs. Rudge and Maslin and Smart and Robb have to finish an uncompleted game to determine the winner of section A, who will play Bardsley and Bull, winner of section B in the final game.
