ACCLIMATISING GAME

NO OPEN SEASON FOR PUKEKO. STRATFORD SOCIETY MEETING. r • An open season for pukeko for the Stratford district has not been granted the Stratford Acclimatisation Society, but an open season for black swart from May 1 to July 31 inclusive has been provided for, according to advice received at the meeting of the council of the Stratford society last night. Those present were Messrs. A. E. Hunter (chairman), E. G. Jones, N. Ebbett, W. J. Walsh, A. E. Eichstaedt, P. Pobrica, J. Petrie, E. Worthington, A. J. Davey, E. P. Pridham and G. A. Carter (secretary). The engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, Mr. C. M. McKenzie, notified that he had received a remit passed at the recent conference of acclimatisation societies asking that all applications relating to the harnessing of waters for hydro-electric purposes should be referred to the acclimatisation society before being granted. That had been given every consideration, he said, but while he was willing to safeguard the interests of societies when specific cases might be referred to the Public Works Department for action, he could not recommend the Government’s undertaking to notify the societies that might be concerned when every application to use water for power purposes had been received.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. J. A. Young, referring to a remit passed at the New Zealand conference, stated that no major works were contemplated by the Lands and Survey Department, nor even any minor works that would have the effect of draining lagoons oh other places at present frequented by water fowl. The annual meeting of the society will be held on the usual meeting night next month.
