NGAERE FAMILY DEPARTS

MESSRS. SEABRIGHT FAREWELLED.

Mr.' George Seabright and his sons, William, Leslie and James, who arei leaving the Ngaere district, were farewelled at a social evening on Monday by about 70 friends of the family from Midhirst and Ngaere. Mr. Seabright has been farming with his sons oh Sole Road for 18 years. Before that the family lived on Bird Road for a number of years. Mr. G. Bulmer presented a suitcase and travelling rug to Mr. Seabright, the subscribers being settlers of Sole and Bird roads and the business men of Ngaere. Each son received a present from the settlers, including presents from Mr. and Mrs. J. Faulkner and Mrs. A. Nolly.

CARDIFF DISTRICT NEWS.

TENNIS AND BASKETBALL. On Thursday the Mahoe tennis team visited Cardiff. The match resulted in a win for Cardiff by 13 sets (88 games) to three sets (50 games). Details are:— Women’s singles: Miss M. Brunton defeated Miss Jones 6—5, Miss G. Hom defeated Miss Mellow 6—4, Miss C. Rayner lost tp Miss J. Shrimpton 4r—6, Miss M. Rayner lost to Miss D. Shrimpton 4-6..

Men’s singles: Ju Redshaw defeated G. Cave 6—3, W. Brunton defeated R. Jones 6—5, H. Bennett defeated G. Tobeck 6—4, H. Petersen defeated J. Corbett 6 —3. Women’s doubles: Misses M. Brunton and G. Hom defeated Misses Jones and Mellow 6—2, Misses C. and M. 4 Rayner defeated Misses D. and J. Shrimpton 6-4.

Men’s doubles: J. Redshaw and W. Brunton defeated G. Cave and R. Jones 6—5, A. Bennett and H. Petersen lost to G. Tobeck and J. Corbett 6—2. Combined doubles: Miss M. Brunton and L. Redshaw defeated Miss Jones and G. Cave 6—3, Miss G. Hom and W. Brunton defeated Miss Mellow and R. Jones 6—4, Miss C. Rayner and A. Bennett defeated Miss J. Shrimpton and G. Tobeck 6—2, Miss M. Rayner and H. Petersen defeated Miss D. Shrimpton and J. Corbett 6—o.

The annual meeting of the basketball club was held on Friday afternoon. There was a good attendance. The balancesheet disclosed a favourable position, there being £1 2s 6d in hand. The report, read by the club captain, Miss C. Rayner, gave the results of the year’s play and in view of the fact that the club was started late in the season these .were very encouraging.

The election of officers resulted: President, Mrs. C. Hawkes; vice-presidents, three; club captain, Miss G. Horn; vicecaptain, Mrs. C. Rayner; secretary, Miss M. Richards. It was decided that subscriptions be the same as last year, and that the opening practice be held on April 18. The first of a series of euchre parties was held in the hall on Friday evening, when 11 tables competed. The prizewinners were Mr. A. Hoskin and Mrs. Neil. ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. The annual ball of the Mahoe Hockey Club will be held in the Mahoe hall on Wednesday next. Novelty dances will be included in a programme of modern and old-time dances.

The annual Toko, seven-a-side. junior Rugby tournament for the Kerin Cup and trophies will be held at the Toko domain to-morrow. A dance at which trophies will be presented will be held at night. The Rawhitiroa Golf Club has decided to hold a working-bee on Monday next in preparation for the opening day, which will take place shortly. It was decided to hold the annual golf ball on July 11.

With the object of encouraging music at Stratford, particularly of catering for the musically inclined listener, it is proposed to form a branch of the British Music Society at Stratford. For this purpose a public meeting will be held in the borough council chambers at 8 p.m. to-morrow, April 11, where the subject will be discussed, and all who are in any way interested in music are invited to attend.
