INJURY TO ILLUMINATE

PREPARATIONS FOR SATURDAY. SOME INTERESTING TRIALS. 1 The close proximity of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday, is lending additional interest to the track work at New Plymouth. The tracks were in good order, yesterday morning when as usual, all. the ■ galloping took place on the course proper with the flags fairly well out. • Proceedings were marred by an unfortunate accident .to Illuminate, a mishap that resulted in his destruction. He was carrying out a seven furlong gallop on his. own and-looked like putting up a fast time when just after passing the two furlong post he was seen to falter. When he pulled up, it was easily seen that something was amiss as he could scarcely put one of his hind feet on the ground. An examination showed that he had broken a small bone, in the leg. His owner, Mr. A. Lile, will have the sympathy of all racing enthusiasts as Illuminate’s prospects . for further engagements were distinctly bright. The first to work were Refresher and Merry Way. This pair. covered seven furlongs, the last five in lm.-6s. Both moved pleasingly. Ringside was again responsible for a good effort when he finished too solidly for Gold Mission at the conclusion of five furlongs in lm. 5 4-ss. Ringside is sluggish when _ working on his own, but goes well in company. He has improved considerably during the last fortnight. An attractive performance was registered by. Tahurangi- when he accounted for . Amyril very decisively over seven furlongs, the last six taking lm. 20s. He moved particularly freely .all the way but Amyril. never appeared to be going .well. ' After giving . a good display in a schooling over four hurdles Ngareta galloped half a mile on the flat in 555. She hit out in good style but is scarcely forward enough to show her hest as yet. Chief Marionette, looking very bright and well, was restricted to solid pace Work on the plough. The Tiger worked on the same track, howling once round at an easy threequarte.r pace. He appears to be in great heart and should show up in the Okoari handicap on Saturday. • Sporting Song was restricted to steady pace work. Two Okoari handicap candidates in Lady Kyra and Orapai staged an interesting trial over five furlongs The former beginning better was always in front, though Orapai was within a length of her at the first. They ran the first three furlongs in 38s. and the full distance in lm. 4s. Lady Kyra moved in a pleasing way. while Orapai was finishing on solidly. Davistock and Aussie Ra were sent a mile, picking up Kaola at the seven furlongs. The latter hopped off with a length break and was still about half a length in front of the other pair at the end. They ran the seven furlongs in lm. 36 3-ss. Kaola worked well for a hurdler but Davistock and Aussie Ra were going strongly at the finish. Cereal, who arrived from Waitara on Monday, galloped half a mile with Joy Box in 525. Both moved in good style. Cereal looks as though he has done plenty of work. • Red Fox, Anchises and Golden Rul did- easy pace work. ,
