MAORI RUGBY TEAM

NEW SOUTH WALES WANTS VISIT: FINANCIAL SUCCESS DOUBTED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, April 9. The council committee of the Nev; South Wales Rugby Union, by 15 votes to 14, decided to invite a Maori team to visit New South Wales this season. This decision was made in the face of very strong opposition from the treasurer, Mr. J. Breckenridge, who declared that he would not be responsible for the Union finances at- the end of the season if the Maoris were invited. Mr. Breckenridge expressed doubts of the playing and drawing capabilities of the Maoris and said that the invitation was l. financial risk that was not warranted.

Presenting the management committee’s case for extending the invitation, Mr. F. Herlihy said there was reason to think the present Maori side would compare favourably with such teams that had previously proved most attractive and successful in New South Wales.
