POPPY DAY APPEAL

HELP FOR RETURNED MEN

COLLECTION AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

LIST OF HELPERS FOR FRIDAY.

The New Plymouth Returned Soldiers’ Association will make its annual Poppy Day appeal on Friday when members of the public will be asked to remember and help those men who, through war disabilities, are unable to make a living sufficient to supply the ordinary necessities of life.

This year it is hoped that the response of the townspeople will be even more generous than usual. The money is more urgently needed than formerly. The organisers of the appeal point out that this is the only day of the year when assistance is asked for those who sacrificed so much. The poppies sold on Poppy Day are made by disabled returned soldiers and it is pointed out that the whole of the proceeds is used for the relief of distress among returned soldiers and their dependents, not one penny being deducted for administration or organisation purposes. The organisation of Poppy Day will this year be in charge of Mrs. J. C. Nicholson, with Mrs. R. Curtis organising the country districts. Very complete arrangements have been made for the appeal throughout the district The headquarters for the day will be the. Taranaki Women’s Club which has again been placed at the disposal of the organisers of the appeal. Collectors have been asked to call for their boxes and poppies, which will be at the club to-morrow afternoon. Mrs. F. L. Hartnell, assisted by Mrs. T. G. Thomson, will again be in charge of the arrangements for morning and afternoon tea for helpers and collectors and Mesdames Cartwright, Anderson and S. F.
