WORKERS’ EDUCATION
ASSOCIATION REQUESTS GRANT. DEPUTATION TO THE MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, March 22. A request that the Government should reinstate its grants to the Workers’ Educational Association was made to the Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Education, yesterday by a deputation from the Dominion council of the association. Mr. Smith, in reply, said he had always been sympathetic with the movement. The cancellation of the grants was a matter of Government policy and the question of restoration was now before the Government, and the association would be advised at the earliest possible moment of Cabinet’s decision. A second deputation to the Minister was one from the Wellington School Committees’ Federation with a request for increased capitation grants. Mr. Smith said he desired to do the best possible for all the children of New Zealand, but was hampered by lack of funds. He desired to go into the whole matter and discuss details with the Wellington Education Board.
