BOXING AT PATEA
THE ASSOCIATION’S YEAR. DECLINE IN RECEIPTS SHOWN. The failure of members to support their officers and the sport of boxing was alleged to be the partial cause of the poor financial return during the past season by the secretary, Mr. T. J. Scott, at the annual meeting of the Patea Boxing Association. Mr. F. Naismith presided, eleven members attending. « The committee’s annual report stated that notwithstanding the fact that the club had not been able to make up the leeway in regard to the debit balance of the previous year, the season had been a successful one. The debit this year had been considerably reduced, and with a successful season and the support of the public the club should this year be able to further reduce its liabilities. The assets of the club largely exceeded the indebtedness, but it was ready cash that was wanted, and the expenditure of past years would mostly be non-recurring, as it must be remembered that the club had no gear at all of its own, and in order to carry on the sport of boxing in the district a ring, mat, etc., which represented a heavy expenditure, had to be purchased, and represented the assets of considerably over £3O. During the year the club had control of the Taranaki championships, and with the assistance of Mr. Veitch, the
Taranaki association’s secretary, these were very successful. Of course, from a financial point of view as far as the club was concerned this tournament did not help the club, as the profits had to be devoted to sending the Taranaki team to the New Zealand championships. Patea had two representatives at the' championships, V. and C. Gordon, and it was very pleasing that C. Gordon returned with the Jamieson belt for the most scientific boxer in New Zealand. The public of Patea and the Hawera association were to be complimented on the splendid way they responded to an appeal for funds to send C. Gordon and his father to the championships. Thanks were due to the donors of trophies and all who worked with a will to make the year a success. Special mention should be made of the e: ’ent control of the meetings exercised by Mr. R. W. Haddow, the referee, who was always on the alert to put down anything that tended to lower the dignity of the sport. A credit balance of 15s was reported and the secretary submitted a financial statement showing the decline in receipts of both gate money and members’ subscriptions over ten years. Officers were elected as follows: Patron, Dr. W. T. Simmons; president, Mr. F. Ramsbottom;' treasurer, Mr. E. F. Hemingway; vice-presidents, 29 were elected; medical officers, Drs. W. F. Simmons and P. V. Graves; committee, Messrs. W. Brosnan, F. Locker, T. Ewens, M. Sumich, L. Davies, L. Hunt, D. Quickenden, F. Pracey, J. Bourke, S. R. Ellis and V. Brosnan; auditor, Mr. W. M. Milliken.
Mr. T. J. Scott was elected secretary pro tem, he having decided on account of the pressure of other business to resign. The question of appointing a match committee was left in abeyance.
