HAWERA

Miss E. Morton, Collins Street, is spending a few days at Auckland. Mrs. A. T. Wills and Miss A. Wills returned home last week-end. Mrs. W. Hughes, Fitzroy, arrived on Thursday and is Mrs. L. J. Bull’s guest. Mrs. Dean, Kaitaia, is the guest of her sister, Miss J. McCalll. Mrs. A. K. North left for the south during the week on a motoring holiday.

Mrs. Buist and Miss E. Buist returned on Thursday after spending a few days at Wellington.

Mrs. R. S. Ward, who has been spending a fortnight’s holiday at Auckland, returned home yesterday. Miss L. Hunter, Wanganui, was a visitor to Hawera for the debutante dance on Thursday.

Mrs. A. Harrop paid a short visit to her sister, Mrs. C. Twist, at Inglewood during the week.

Mrs. Ibbotson, New Plymouth, is the guest of Mrs. T. J. Allan. Miss Joan Oliver, Eltham, also visited Mrs. Allan during the week-end. Mrs. Todhunter, Sydney, arrived early in the week and will be the guest of her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Sutton, for several weeks.

Miss Myra Goodson, Wellington, who has been Mrs. P. Moyes’ guest at Oeo for the past two weeks, is staying with Miss E. Murdoch.

Miss H. Carson is spending a holiday in the South Island and during her stay will attend the librarians’ conference at Timaru.

Mrs. G. Wyatt and her daughter left last week to pay a holiday visit to Mrs. Wyatt’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mills, in the Sounds district, Marlborough. Nurse Russell, who has been at Waitara for several months, has returned to Hawera, and has taken up duties at a private hospital. Mesdames H. M. Besley, G. W. Powdrell, A. K. Fyson, Bird (Wellington), W. McL’Dowie, A. J. Corrigan and Miss M. Washer were among the Hawera visitors to the Waverley show on Monday. At a card evening and dance at Tokoara for the blue baby’s funds on Friday evening, Mr. and Mrs. Gundeson and Mr. and Mrs. Pearce were the winners of the five-hundred prize. There was a good attendance. The music was supplied by Mrs. Bennett, Mr. McDonald playing an extra, and Mr. L. Barr was master of ceremonies.

The funds for Baby Antoni, everybody’s baby, in the Hawera Plunket carnival, will benefit considerably through a five-hundred evening held at Mrs. E. McLean’s, Union Street, on Tuesday, which was largely attended. The room was tastefully decorated with tall vases and bowls of flowers. Supper was served by Mesdames Hoddle and McLean.

At a flag five-hundred evening in aid of the country baby on Friday night at the Whakamara hall there was a large attendance, and dancing was continued after supper. Mrs. McLinchy, Miss C. Gulliver and Messrs. Dobson and Buckrell were the winners, the largest number of flags being won by ’ Miss P. Barkla and Mr. S. Buckrell, Misses Skevington, Johnston, and Messrs. Wills and Gulliver were awarded consolation prizes.

Several friends assembled at Mrs. W. G. Simpson’s invitation at her home dn Wednesday night to farewell Mrs. J. Henson and Miss Jessie Henson, . who will leave shortly on a holiday visit to England, Scotland and the Shetland Isles. The hostess wore a black floral georgette frock, while Mrs. Henson chose a flowered georgette gown in blue tonings. A white figured frock was worn by Miss Henson. The guests present included Mesdames D. Smart, J. W. Velvin, Anderson, Dean (Kaitaia), and Misses C. Reilly, J. McCall, and W. and M. Quin.

A large number of country supporters gathered at Mrs. J. M. Collins’ home, South Road, on Monday night, when a selected musical programme, arranged by Miss W. Huggins was presented. Mrs. Collins was gowned in black angelskin lace with a pale pink, cowl fronted yoke, and Miss Huggins wore black georgette with a floral shoulder spray. Those contributing to the programme were Mesdames Anderson, P. O. Veale, G. A. Duncan, W. C. Fyfe, Miss I. Lawson, Messrs. R. Maunder, H. Ackroyd and Master Barker. Others present included Mesdames A. M. Winks, H. G. Whitehead, W. G. Simpson, A. Thomson, A. M. Young, H. D. Caplen, R. P. Baigent, W. S. Gibson, J. Robertson, H. M. Besley, G. W. Powdrell, H. Ackroyd, Baker, W. W. Gibson, H. D. Caplen, and Misses P. Ings, A. Kemp, H. and M. Collins, M. Thomson, Thom (Opunake), J. McCall, Irvine, Robertson, M. Simpson and J. Winks.

Mrs. L. B. Lewis and Mrs. E. M. Bardsley were hostesses at afternoon tea at Mrs. Lewis’ home, Grey Street, on Tuesday. Bowls of bright-hued asters and other mixed blooms made pretty' decorations in the sitting room. Mrs. Lewis wore a black flat crepe frock with inlet vestee ana Peter Pan collar in white. Mrs. Bardsley’s frock was of reseda green trimmed with pin tucks. Mrs. C. Whittington won a competition. Musical items were given by Mrs. W. H. Snowsill and little Divina Rowe. Others present included Mrs. J. W. Ogle, G. C. Pickett, N. F. Stead, B. Smart, Cross, R. J. O’Dea, C. Whittington, L. H. Giblin, E. R. Bavin, J. Thomson, R. A. Harvey, C. O. Pratt, T. R. Overton, W.
