DEATH OF OLD RESIDENT

THE LATE MR. LOUIS FREESTONE. Mr. Louis Freestone, who died at Lepperton on Sunday, came to Taranaki about 40 years ago under engagement to Dr. T. H. A. Valentine, then practising at Inglewood. Later Mr. Freestone went to Lepperton as head gardener for the late Mrs. McTaggart, whose homestead and well-kept gardens were opposite the site of the Lepperton Junction railway station. For many years Mr. Freestone had not enjoyed good health. The funeral took place at the Lepperton cemetery on Tuesday afternoon when there was a large number present. Mr. W. N. Ackland officiated at the graveside at the request of the deceased. Many floral emblems were received. The pallbearers were Messrs. H. E. Blyde, E. A. Oliver, J. Maskery, D. and S. McKee and Mr. H Mace, Huirangi. A short service was held at the residence. Gift Evening Held. There was a large attendance at the Lepperton hall at a gift evening for Mr. and Mrs. Woisin, whose home was recently destroyed by fire. Two tables were laden with gifts of all descriptions. Mr. H. E. Blyde (Farmers’ Union? spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Woisin and his family were held in the district and expressed the pleasure it gave them all to be of some assistance. On behalf of the Farmers’ Union Mr. Blyde presented Mr. Woisin with a set of farm tools. Mr. F. T. Crowe (hall committee) stressed Mr. Woisin’s services to the halL On behalf of the committee Mr. Crowe presented Mr. Woisin with a floor rug and a Morris chair. Mr. Woisin expressed his thanks, especially to the Wvmen’s Division. Music for dancing was played by Mrs. Gordon Hall (piano), Mr, £. Hellier (violin) and Messrs. Rowe and Watson. The masters of ceremonies were Messrs. H. E. Blyde and Allan Old. Community singing and songs by Mrs. Staples and two cornet solos by Master Keith Cadman were appreciated. Competitions were won by Mrs. W. Hellier and Miss Jean Baker. The evening was arranged by the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, assisted by the Women’s Division.
