INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS

MEETING HELD AT URENUI SUCCESSFUL FIRST VENTURE. PUKEARUHE HAS NARROW WIN. GOOD PERFORMANCE BY URENUI. An ambitious undertaking, the interschool sports meeting held on the Urenui domain yesterday by the recently formed Urenui District Primary Schools Sports Association was an unqualified success. More than 600 people, including 350 competitors, were present and saw the Pukearuhe school win the Herbert Smith Trust Fund Cup for the first time. Ten schools competed. Urenui was the run-ner-up, being two points behind the winner, the final race of the day, the senior relay, deciding the issue. The sports were excellently conducted and, despite a three-quarter hour delay in starting on account of the non-arrival of competitors from a distance, the programme was up to the schedule at the luncheon adjournment. Keen interest was taken by parents and children alike, and considerable excitement reigned when it became known that with but two events to go Urenui with 71 points and Pukearuhe with 68 led the field. The junior relay yielded the latter school a point, leaving Urenui in the lead-by two points with tire senior relay to be run. Pukearuhe won this event to gain five points, while Mimi forced Ureirui into third place for a point. A feature of the sports was the jumping of J. White (Pukearuhe), who was undefeated at 4ft Bin in the high jump, and reached 14ft Bin in the long jump. / To facilitate the running of the sports the children were permitted to enter irrespective of the relays for three events only. The flat races were open to all children, but such events as throwing the basket ball, and the long and high jump were competed for by school representatives. The difficulty of the smaller- schools being at a disadvantage on account of the greater number of competitors available to the larger schools was overcome by the introduction of a system of points, whereby the smaller schools were apportioned a quota in accordance with the numerical size of the school. Urenui, the runner-up, was on the scratch mark, while the winner, Pukearuhe, was allotted 25 points, the maximum being 45. A school had to gain eight points before it could take advantage of the quota allotted. ORDER OF MERIT. A complete list of the schools competing, showing the abbreviations used in the detailed results, the quota allotted and the final points, is: Pukearuhe (Pk),. 25, 74; Urenui (Un), scr, 72; Mount Messenger (Mt.M), 32, 54; Waiau (W), 25, 52; Mimi (M), 25, 49; Motunui (Mo), 20, 48; Okoke (O), 25, 45; Uruti (U), 32, 42; Kaipikiri (K), 40; —; Pehu (P), 45, —. Mr. L. J. Kemp, president if the association, expressed pleasure at the large attendance at the first of the inter-school sports to be held in the district On account of its situation schools in the Urenui district found difficulty in attending the sports at either New Plymouth or Awakino, and at a meeting of teachers and representatives of school committees it had been decided to form the Urenui District Primary Schools’ Sports Association and- hold a meeting. Whether the action was justified or not could be judged from the result of the day. He. thanked the school committees, parents and those who had placed lorries at tire disposal of; the committee for their help. Without their co-operation the meeting could not have been a success. He personally was gratified with the result and congratulated the run-ner-up. ,

Mr. T. J. Griffin, member of the Taranaki Education Board, in presenting the Herbert Smith Trust cups to representatives of the Pukearuhe and Urenui schools, congratulated the association on tire meeting. Everything was in its favour and tire meeting had been highly successful.

He thought the children had come to the sports with the object of piling up as many points as possible so as to win the cups, said Mr. Griffin. That was all very well but he thought the teachers had another object. They had organised the meeting as a part of the children’s education. It was no good to be proficient in school work only and the sports ground gave them opportunities to develop qualities that would serve them in good stead. Sport taught them to be unselfish, and decent and not to be jealous and envious of others. It taught them to be always ready to congratulate those ahead of them. It was mighty easy to be a bad loser but much harder to be a good loser. He was sure the other schools did not regret Pukearuhe and Urenui's success.
