SCHOOL ATHLETICS

1200 PUPILS TAKE PART CENTRAL WINS BOARD’S SHIELD. LOWER MANGOREI'S FURRIE CUP. IMPRESSIVE MARCH IN PARADE. Over 1200 children representing 20 schools marching in impressive display around the sports area, each school led by a banner bearing its name and number, presented an inspiring sight at the opening of the North Taranaki Primary Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association’s eighth annual meeting at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth, yesterday. It was a fitting beginning to a day of strenuous competition and friendly rivalry. In extending a welcome to parents, teachers and competitors Mr. G. A. Lyall, president of the association, congratulated those from country schools for overcoming difficulties of transport. At 11 o’clock the grand parade of competitors began. The spirit put into the marching and the precision of some schools augured well for an excellent day. Although the programme consisted of 19S events, the well organised work of the officials allowed no delay and the events were completed at 4.30 p.m. after four and a-half hours. A second grand parade was held during the afternoon. Handicap points allotted to encourage smaller schools were based on the difference in roll number between each school and the largest school. Central by scoring 97 points from scratch won the Education Board’s Shield by a margin of 11 points from Westown, which was runner-up for the second time. The third school, Lower Mangorei, with a handicap of 51, totalled 84 points, thereby retaining the Furrie Cup for schools up to grade 3. Kaimata, fourth with a total of 79 from a handicap of 52, was runner-up to Lower Mangorei. The points in order of merit with handicaps in parentheses were: Central (0) 97, Westown (37) 85, Lower Mangorei (51) 84, Kaimata (52) 79, Hillsborough (54) 76, Tikorangi (54) 67, Frankley Road (54) 66, Welbourn (54) 64, Lepperton (53) 63, Oakura (54) 62, Fitzroy (16) 62, Vogeltown (45) 59, Moturoa (44) 58, Inglewood (40) 57, Waitara (25) 56, Kaimiro (55) 55, Omata (54) 55, Carrington Road (54 ) 54,. Bell Block (52) 52 and West End (21) 32. RACING KEEN THROUGHOUT. The racing was keen throughout the meeting ahd altogether nine records were broken. The events in which records were broken -were: Girls’ events: 50 yards, nine years, from 8 l-5s to 8s; 100 yards skip, 13 years, from 13 4-5 s to 13 3-ss; 50 yards junior hurdles from 10 3-5 s to 9 l-ss; junior relay from 45s to 445. It won by sheer merit.” Although at tire first the association had feared the handicaps would be too great for some of the town schools, Central had proved that the obstacle was not insurmountable. Westown, he added, seemed to be making a habit of being runner-up, and Lower Mangorei had been outstanding among the lower grade schools for several years. He wished them all luck at next year’s meeting. He thanked all who had assisted with the sports, especially those women teachers who had conducted the The schools represented, with abbreviations in parentheses, were: Central (C), 801 l Block (BB), Hillsborough (H), Fitzroy (F), Omata (O), Inglewood (I), Lepperton (L).
