NGAERE SCHOOL SHOW

FLOWERS AND CHILDREN'S WORK. EXCELLENCE OF EXHIBITS. The annual show of the Ngaere school was held yesterday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of parents and visitors. The chairman, Mr. J. Thomas, welcoming -visitors, referred to the introduction of classes for adults and said .it was hoped to increase these next year. The school exhibits were a credit to the teachers, Mr. G. C. Harre and Miss K. Grant, but owing to the dry season and pests some allowance would have to be made for the flowers and vegetables. He thanked Mr. Tarrant for judging the children’s plots and said this would be continued next year. Mr. Thomas thanked the stewards and judges and the parents who had contributed to the prize money. He also thanked Miss Walker for demonstrating decorative work to the children.

Mr. Harre, headmaster, welcomed parents present and said the school work was up to standard. Fourteen years ago the show had been initiated by Mr. Brown, and if Mr. Brown were present he would feel quite satisfied with the results. The children derived a great deal of pleasure in preparing their work. Mr. R. Syme,- agricultural instructor, said he had enjoyed the day as well as any of the other shows. The skill of the children had increased in greater proportion than the ravages of the pests and tire vegetables were the best that had ever been grown, particularly the carrots and parsnips. He congratulated the children on the splendid work done. The extension of the competition to home plots had been a good thing. He remarked that the show possessed great educational value and hoped that next year members of the Education Board would be present.

The show was then opened by Dr. Doris Gordon, who expressed delight at the exhibition. She complimented the parents for standing behind the children in their work. Ngaere had always held a reputation in horticulture and perhaps this was in a measure due to

the influence of the late Mr. C. Sanders, who had been the father of horticulture in the district and the inspiration of the work shown to-day. Tribute was paid to the educational value of the work, and Dr. Gordon said she was sure Mr. Harre was giving the boys and girls the best possible education in developing the faculties of hand and brain which would tend towards greater happiness in life. A feature was a special display of dahlias from the gardens of Mr. C. E, Rowe (Eltham) and H. Sharp (Matapu). The judges were: Mr. R. Syme (vegetables), Mr. V. N.
