SHOWING THE WAY.

The splendid donation made by Lord Nuffield for the benefit of the crippled children of New Zealand will be welcomed for more than one reason by those who have concerned themselves in this problem. A gift of £50,000 is sufficient to put heart into any organisation, but Lord Nuffield’s action has had the further value of awakening and stimulating interest in efforts not only to relieve suffering but to enable children handicapped by Nature to take their place later on as useful citizens of the Dominion. The donation made by Lord Nuffield has already drawn others for the same purpose, and has roused public opinion to a responsibility that rests upon the community. It is to the credit of Rotary in New Zealand that it was one of the first large organisations to recognise that responsibility and to seek means of carrying it. The care of crippled children, was a project in which a former Governor of Rotary, the late Mr. T. C. List, had taken great interest. He and others who had studied the problem were convinced that given the necessary means for special treatment recovery was possible for many children, and that for almost all young cripples much could be done to relieve suffering and to improve their outlook on a life that must of necessity be limited in certain directions. Lord Nuffield’s generosity has removed some of the financial difficulties in the way. It entitled him also to make the plea he did so in the hope that others who have the means should support the good work he had endowed. It is satisfactory to note that Lord Nuffield’s appeal has met with prompt response, thus indicating once more that when the need for help is made manifest the community is willing to do its share.
