EGMONT SHIELD MATCHES. MATAPU BEATS MANGATOKI. Playing on the Mangatoki courts on Saturday, Matapu beat Mangatoki in a match for the Egmont Shield tennis competition, the score being 16 sets (114 games) to 8 sets (92 games). Mangatoki players are named first in the following details:—

Mangatoki Club Competition. In the semi-final match for the Bridger tennis racquet Miss D. Gatenby (7) beat Mrs. A. E. Mahon (owe 19) 50—10. The game was hard fought and produced many long rallies and some good tennis. Miss D. Gatenby (7) will meet Miss N. Astbury (scr.) in the women’s final. For the men’s racquet H. Linn (10) will play L. Astbury (2) and S. Morgan (owe 19) will play J. Lambie (10) in the semi-finals.

STRATFORD ATHLETICS. HANDICAPS FOR TO-NIGHT. The fortnightly meeting of the Stratford Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club is to be held to-night instead of on Thursday to avoid interference with the New Zealand championships meeting. ELTHAM CROQUET MATCHES.

STRATFORD AND KAPONGA. On Friday inter-club croquet matches were played at Stratford and Eltham. Mrs. J. D. McKay and Miss Thomas beat Mrs. Harkness and Mrs. Moon in both games. Mrs. Manley and Mrs. Fountaine lost both their games played with Mrs. Broklebank and Mrs. Butchart Mrs. Egarr and Mrs. Thomas beat Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Coward in two games. Mrs.’ Gower and Mrs. Bates played Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Summerfield two games—one win for Stratford players and one for Eltham. Kaponga players were entertained at Eltham and enjoyed their day, the honours being divided Mrs. Thurston and Mrs. Summers lost to Mrs. Tyack and Mrs. Gardiner. Mrs. Hilmer and Mrs. Clare beat Mrs. Thurston and Mrs. Benny. Singles, Kaponga players names mentioned first, resulted: Mrs. Tyack beat Mrs. Thurston, Mrs. Gardiner beat Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Thurston beat Mrs. Hilmer, Mrs. Benny lost to Mrs. Clare.

ADVERTISERS’ ANNOUNCEMENTS. Stratford retailers have been asked by the Mayor, Mr. J. W. McMillan, to close their premises to-day from 11 a.m. to noon for the funeral of Rev. Father D. McLaughlin. The annual St. Patrick’s social and dance will be held in the parish hall, Eltham, on Monday, March 18, when an entertaining programme will be presented.
