MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED.

CAR AND CYCLE DAMAGED.

A collision between a car and a motorcycle occurred on Manaia Road, Kaponga, yesterday morning, resulting in damage to both vehicles. The rider of the cycle, a young man named Fred. Stevens, whose parents live at Stratford, received abrasions on the face, an injury to the ribs where he was struck by the radiator of the car, and a bruised leg. After receiving medical attention he was able to go home. The car, which was driven by Mr. J. S. Tosland, Pihama, was deflected from its course into the hedge by the impact, but it did not overturn and the occupants were uninjured. The car was slightly damaged and had to be towed home. The cycle was badly smashed. The accident occurred as the motorcyclist, who is employed by Mr. C. E. Matthews, was emerging from the latter’s gate into Manaia Road. PERSONAL. There was a large and representative assembly, particularly of old settlers of the district, at the funeral at Hawera yesterday afternoon of Mr. Harry Caplen, who died at Harwera on Sunday. At the graveside the service was conducted by Canon D. B. Malcolm, and the Masonic service was conducted by Messrs. G. H. Buckeridge and J. C. Smith. The pall-bearers were Messrs. G. H. Buckeridge, J. C. Smith (St. Mary’s Church and the Masonic Lodge), H. S. Elliott, A. Coleman (legal fraternity and businessmen), Guy Livingston and G. Glenn (old settlers). Mr. D. G. Smart represented the Taranaki District Law Society and the Hawera Law Society. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Jennings, Fraser Road, are visiting Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. J. Johnson, Fraser Road, left on Saturday for a month’s holiday at Whangarei. GENERAL ITEMS. Founders’ Day Services. Founders’ Day for boy scouts and girl guides was celebrated by a combined service at the Hawera Baptist Church on Sunday evening. About 20 scouts and 30 guides paraded at the scout hall under Scoutmaster T. Lay. District Commissioners, Mr. F. W. Horner (scouts) and Mrs. J. Houston (guides) were in charge at the church. During the service scouts, cubs and guides’ colours were received by the Rev. J. Ings. The lesson was read by Mrs. Houston, while Commissioner Horner recited a scouts’ prayer. Mr. Ings referred to the value of scouting. He stressed the point that the movement had peace as one of its ideals. Before the Benediction was pronounced scouts, cubs and guides joined in the recitation of the Promise.

Croquet Cup Finals. Owing to so many croquet players being at tournaments it has been decided to alter the dates of the final games for the Campbell and McL’Dowie Cups. The Campbell Cup final will be played on the Stratford club’s lawns on Friday, March 22, and the McL’Dowie Cup final on the Avon club’s lawns on Tuesday, March 26. The finals for the New Zealand Council’s silver buttons will be played on Wednesday, March 27. The A grade games will be played at Kaponga, B grade at Okaiawa and C grade at Eltham.

MANAIA DISTRICT NEWS.

PERSONAL AND GENERAL ITEMS.

Mr. Hay, Hastings, is visiting Manaia as the guest of his daughter, Mrs. F. Nelson.

Mr. A. M. Mac Diarmid has returned to Manaia from a fishing holiday at the Bay of Islands and Russell.

Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Yarrow, Mr. and Mrs. Stace (Wellington) and Messrs. H. Yarrow, B. Franklin, J. A. Hansen, Y. Sheerin, E. Sandford and H. Buxton (Auroa) have gone to Kawhia for a holiday. At a meeting of the parishioners of St. Joseph’s Church it was decided to hold a St. Patrick’s grand concert and dance in the Manaia town hall.

Scout Jamboree Film. There was a good attendance in the Manaia town hall on Friday night, ..when Scoutmaster T. Lay screened his film of the Melbourne Scout jamboree. Several items were contributed by the Scouts and local artists. Mr. C. W. Abbott, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mr. Lay and those who had contributed items.

The Manaia Municipal Band, under Conductor J. A. G. Cosgrove, played a concert programme in the rotunda on Saturday evening. Members of the Presbyterian Sunday school and Bible class held a picnic at King Edward Park, Hawera, on Saturday, when races and games were organised by the teachers.

Mr. Allan Gordon was an Auckland visitor to Waverley during the weekend.

Mr. H. Rodgers, who has been visiting Waverley, has returned to Wellington.
