VICTORY BY 68 RUNS

NEW PLYMOUTH OLD BOYS WIN. COMBINED TEAM BEATEN. New Plymouth Old Boys’ team, assisted by three players from Western Park and one from High School, soundly defeated a combined New Plymouth and Western Park team by 59 runs on the first innings. Old Boys, batting first, made 185, a last-wicket partnership of 68 being particularly valuable. The combined team reached a total of 126. The scoring throughout was. remarkably even, the highest tally being Alien’s 39, and no fewer than 14 players reached double figures. Each side batted 12 men. Spedding with five for 33 was the best bowler of the day. The first Old Boys wicket fell at 21, when both Gilbert and Richardson were dismissed. Spedding dominated the scoring in a brief innings, but with a wild slog failed to connect. Two more wickets fell but then Thomson and Medley in a bright display added 36. At the fall of the tenth wicket the score was 117. However, in a 11th. wicket stand, Allen and Harris treated the tired bowling with scant respect. Powerful driving characterised their partnership, which took the score to 185 before Harris was bowled by Groombridge. G. Ewart and Parkin, opening the Combined innings, batted briskly, until Ewart was well caught by Spedding and soon afterwards Parkin was easily run out. A. Ewart failed to score. Nasmith, who had played steadily, hit Spedding for four in his second over. Tire. next ball bowled him. Davison and Wilson ran into double figures rapidly, while Larkin scored steadily with safe .singles. Wickets began to fall in quick succession. Davison played outside an off-break from Harris, Wilson and Parkinson were bowled by Spedding, arid a brilliant catch near the ground at.fine leg by Grant sent Larkin back. ; . Hitting hard, Groombridge was the only late batsman to make a stand, the last two falling to the first two balls of Grant’s first over. Details are:— OLD BOYS. PARENTS PLAY PUPILS \ \ GOOD BATTING DISPLAYED. BOTTRILL AND PAPPS SCORE WELL. The New Plymouth Boys’ High School “Parents” team did not permit the Pupils’ bowlers to have everything their own way in the annual match played on Saturday, but their bowling failed against the boys’ strong batting side. Parent*; scored 151, to which the pupils replied with 230. A feature of the batting of the Parents was the excellent displays given by A. Papps and C. G. Bottrill. Papps’ innings was not chanceless, but his powerful cover drives were a delight to watch. With stylish shots all round the wicket, but especially with drives that had the power of splendid timing, Bottrill scored 35. Other double-figure scores that helped the total considerably were made by Eggleton, Mason, Stainton, Carroll and H. J. Larkin. After the Pupils’ opening men had gone .cheaply Johns, Broughton and Simpson made good stands. Although slow at first Johns opened out when settled. Broughton and Simpson batted steadily. Steven, a new member of the senior eleven, displayed promise in an undefeated innings. Fireworks _ were provided by Larkin, who was particularly severe on Eggleton, hitting two sixes and a four off one over. The sixes were delightful shots well into the gully. After a dashing innings in which he passed (he half-century he retired. C. G. Clarke and Mason bowled well for the parents. Details are:— PARENTS. F. J. Eggleton, b Larkin 10 A.
