GUIDES’ SWIMMING

LIFE-SAVING COMPETITIONS. WAITARA WINS BREWSTER SHIELD. The annual life-saving competitions for the Brewster Shield and the Morrison Cup were held amongst representatives of Taranaki Girl Guide companies at the Girls’ High School swimming baths on Saturday. After a good display of both land drill and water work, which was judged by Miss H. Thomson, the Brewster Shield was awarded to Waitara and the Morrison Cup to Tuahine (New Plymouth).

Commenting on the swimming, Miss Dowling congratulated the competitors upon their display, and stated that the standard of work was much higher than that of last year. She urged the teams which had competed to try to rouse more interest in the competition among the rest of the Guides in the province so that there might be more entries next year. ' Mrs. D. K. Morrison, provincial commissioner, presented the trophies and congratulated Waitara in particular upon its success. Waitara had only recently been enrolled as a company, she explained, and it reflected great credit upon the girls’ zeal and enthusiasm that they had proved themselves worthy of winning the shield. - ••• Thanks were accorded Miss Dowling for having supervised the competition and Miss Thomson for having judged the events. .. .. The Brewster Shield competition is for Guides over 13 and meets the requirements of the Royal Life-Saving Sovietys intermediate test. The Morrison Cup, a new trophy this year, is for Guides under 13 and is up to the society’s elementary standard. Details are:— . ' Brewster Shield (possible 220): Waitara'(L. Knight and N.
