FINE SUMMER BLOOMS

STRATFORD’S DISPLAY BEST SHOW FOR MANY YEARS. DECORATIVE CHAMPIONSHIP. With entries fully up to last year’s standard, and the quality of blooms throughout higher than Stratford has seen for many years, the Stratford Horticultural Society’s summer show on Saturday was an outstanding success. Fears for the effect on exhibition blooms of the previous week’s storm proved groundless, the general opinion of judges and exhibitors being that the rain had improved rather than impaired the quality if blooms displayed. The judges expressed their satisfaction at the standard of their respective sections, and remarked on the steady improvement being made. Competition was • close in many classes, and keen interest was aroused in the allocation of the points prizes. The cut flower section Mrs. E. Coldwell won easily, securing the silver cup presented by Mrs. R. Masters and given back again by Mrs. A. D. Walker. Mr. H. Sharp was closely followed by Mr. J. Gibson for the dahlia points prize, a silver cup given by Mrs. Cuthbert and re-presented by Mrs. H. C, Johnson. Only four points separated the two. The only Taranaki championship allotted to the show was the Taranaki amateur decorative championship, which was won by Mrs. Neil Douglas, Stratford. Miss Washer won the points prize in the decorative section, a trophy presented by Dr. Doris Gordon, and Dr. W. P. Gordon’s trophy for the novice classes was won by Miss E. Pearce. The judge of the decorative section, Mrs. Sutherland, Inglewood, • was so pleased with the work exhibited that she gave three special prizes, these being awarded to Miss Walker (for shoulder spray), Miss Pearce (for vase of flowers, novice) and M. Anderson (miniature garden).

The vegetable section saw a very close contest between Mr. F. Jans, holder of the points cup for several years, and the Stratford hospital. In this the hospital was victorious by a margin of nine points. Both exhibited a splendid range of products, several of the vegetables entered being unusual for this, time of year. In the evening there was a large attendance of the public, and, in addition bo the exhibition of blooms, an amusing comedy, “Mrs. Biddlecombe and the Furriners,” produced by Mrs. Uniacke, was provided and proved a great attraction. Prizes won were presented by the president, Mr. H. C. Johnson. Details of the awards are:— POT PLANTS. Judge: Mr. V. Lester. Steward: Mr. A. Bonner. Aspidistra: Mrs. Bocock 1. Hanging basket: P.
