ATHLETES RELAX

SUB-CENTRE PICNIC HELD. BRIGHT EVENT AT STRATFORD. Members of the amateur athletic clubs in Taranaki gathered at King Edward Park, Stratford, yesterday for the first annual picnic of the Taranaki sub-cen-tre. There were over 200 present, and the fixture gave members of the various clubs a welcome opportunity to meet one another socially instead of in the rivalry engendered by a sports ground and the tape at the end of a finishing straight. Dull weather in the morning gave way to warm sunshine and a light breeze. The camp site in the park was an ideal venue, and its conveniences and general suitability for the occasion were remarked by those who came from other districts. The clubs represented were New Plymouth,. New Plymouth Harriers, Stratford, Eltham, -Hawera and Patea.

It would not have been an athletic picnic without a programme of sports, but nearly all the events were of a type designed to amuse rather than to promote strenuous competition. The rules under which the events were conducted were novel and in their originality clearly indicated that competitors must observe them in the spirit rather than in the letter.

The organisers for the day were Mr. W. Ireland, Stratford, secretary of the sub-centre, and Mr. R. L. Wynyard, Stratford. Trophies were presented to sports winners by the president, Mr. A. G. Whiting, Eltham.

NGAERE GARDENS GATHERING. The annual picnic of the Pukengahu school was held at Ngaere Gardens on Friday. Several other schools were also holding their picnics at the same time. r The weather was fine and warm, although during the latter part of the afternoon, a number of clouds obscured the sun. Each child was presented with a ticket, entitling him to free admittance into the grounds. Lunch was had under the shade of some of the trees. One of the day’s attractions was that of boating on the lake.

During the day, races were run for the children, the winners receiving a small cash prize. A children’s treasure hunt was also held.
