KNITTED SCARF AND BERET SET. To make the befet, you will need three ounces of double knitting • wool, and a set of 4 number eight needles pointed at both ends. Cast on 70 stitches—23 on the first and second needles, and 24 on the third.. Work eight rounds in plain knitting; in the ninth round, *K.9, increase once in the next stitch, and repeat from * to the end of the round. -Knit the tenth round plain. Eleventh round, *kn*t 10, increase once in the next stitch, repeat from * to the end of the round. Twelfth round, knit plain, ‘ , Thirteenth round, *K. 11, - increase once in the next stitch, and repeat from

* to the end of the round. Go on increasing in every other round, until you have 140 stitches. Knit ten rounds plain, then start decreasing. First round, *knit 18, knit 2 together, repeat frOm * to the end of the round. Knit the second round plain. Third round, *K. 17, knit 2 together, repeat from * to the end of the round. Go on decreasing like this, until you have 14 stitches left. Break off the wool, darn the end through the 14 stitches, .pull up tightly, and fasten off well. To make the little “stalk” on top of the beret, work a crochet chain, one inch long, fasten off, and sew firmly into the dp. To make the scarf, you will want eight ounces of four-ply wool in the same shade as the beret, and two number seven needles. Cast on 72 stitches, and knit in alternate rows of plain and purl for three inches. Now work the first basket-pattern band which trims the scarf. First row, four plain, four purl, four plain,, and so on, to the end of the row, ending with four purl. Next row the same, and the next two rows the same. Fifth row, start with four purl, and end with four plain, and work the next three rows to match. Work the last four rows like the first four. This gives a neat basket-pattern. Knit six inches of alternate rows of plain and purl, then twelve rows of basket-pat-tern, then six more inchfes Of alternate rows of plain and purl, and so on, until the scarf is the .required length.
