CREDIT BALANCE AT MANAIA, PERSONAL AND GENERAL NEWS. A meeting of the Manaia sports and dance committee of the provincial Caledonian sports held on January 23, was held on Wednesday. Mr. W. A. Brown, chief, presided over a good attendance. The balance sheet showed that receipts totalled £94 19s 3d and expenditure £B9 5s lid, leaving a credit balance of £5 13s 4d which will be forwarded to the Taranaki Centre. Mr. Brown said the position was creditable. The sports and dance were a huge success. The expenses were cut down considerably compared with expenses at previous sports. Much of the success had been due to the work of the joint secretaries, Messrs. J. Rodie and R. L. Bennett. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. J. Barrie, Williamson, B. Badland, C. Franklin, J. Naim, L. Matter, Cryer and V. Winter and all who assisted. Votes of thanks were also accorded the women’s committee for work at the dance and Auroa women for their assistance. A grant was made to the gate-keepers at 7s 6d each for work done at the sports and dance. Mr. Brown expressed appreciation. Mr. E. S. Bennett has left to spend a holiday at Wellington. Brown Owl N. Christie and Tawney Owl B.' Hobday and Guides N. Payne, E. Kay, P. Ingram. G. Wells, D. Malley, G. Baldwin, B. Luter and J. Power will leave to-day to attend the guide and Brownie rally at Trentham. At a meeting of the Manaia Temus and Croquet Clubs on Tuesday evening, it was decided to dig the present croquet lawns up and resow and level the greens. M4TAPU SCHOOL PICNIC. GATHERING AT OPUNAKE. The Matapu school held its annual, picnic at the Opunake beach last Friday. Sea and weather conditions were ideal. Lunch and afternoon tea were provided by the women. A full programme of running events was gone through. The officials were: Messrs. O. Robertson and Riddick (judges), Mr. Prestidge (prize steward), Mr. Stevenson (handicapper), Mr. Seed (starter). The winners of the principal events were:— Boys: Standards 5 and 6, Harry Wetton 1 Les. Keighey 2; standard 4, John Hogan 1, Michael Walsh 2; standard 3, Garth Rowland and Noel Simpson equal 1; standard 2, Owen Brisco 1. Girls: Standards 5 and 6, Eunice Sherwood 1; standard 4, Adeline Alexander 1, Mildred Bosson 2; standard 3, Eva Rickard 1, Mavis Preece 2; standard 2, Verna Prestidge 1, Ngaere Alexander 2; standard 1, Beryl Foster 1, Alice Pitt 2. Sack race, boys: Senior, Graham Carter first heat, Larry Prestdige second heat; junior, Keith Raikes first heat, Rex Prestidge second heat.
