MANAIA’S NEW VICAR

CANON J. H. SYKES INSTALLED. WELCOMED BY PARISHIONERS. There was a large attendance at the Manaia Anglican Church on Tuesday evening, when Canon J. H. Sykes was installed by the Ven. Archdeacon J. R. Young, Wanganui, as Vicar of Manaia. Many visiting clergy were present at the service including the Rev. Mr. Langston (Eltham), the Rev. Canon D. Malcolm (HSwera) and Rev. Mr. Farnell (Opunake). Archdeacon Young said that for the new vicar there was a happy ministry at Manaia for he knew from his personal knowledge the qualities of the Manaia people. Canon Sykes had many good qualities and was a man whose long association with the work of the church in the cities had given him rare wisdom and understanding. He brought the rare gifts of knowledge and saintliness. Archdeacon Young said many people were not clear for what the Church stood and thought it existed for conduct of baptisims, marriages and funerals, while others were under the impression it existed to oppose immodest dress and functions. Some thought the Church disregarded anything suggestive of happiness, while others expressed the idea that the Church offered a brilliant future in some far-off Heaven to the failures of, life. The Church was the body of Christ. It was the spirit of honesty and truth, unselfishness and eager sacrifice and solved the problems of life in God’s one way, by preventing 'people living lives checked by fear, uncleanliness and untruth. The Spirit of God was so mighty that it united all together. The Church was not comprised of clergy alone;, it consisted of all who were in the Spirit of God and depended on the peoples expressions of God’s Spirit. Although the aims of Christianity were so wonderful, people were, called upon to live in every day actions and home life. The following of God’s way was the only thing which would redeem the community. After the service all adjourned to the Oddfellow’s Hall, where a welcome was given to Canon Sykes and his family by the parishioners. Mr. H. R. Penny, chairman, on behalf of the parishioners, welcomed Canon Sykes and family to Manaia and hoped their stay would be fruitful and pleasant. Archdeacon Young also welcomed the new vicar. Items were rendered as follows: Violin solo, Mr. C. Betts; song, Miss M. Mackie; pianoforte duet, Mrs. and Miss Mackie, pianoforte solo, Mrs. J. Johnstone. Mrs. L. Mackie and Miss A.
