JOHNSONVILLE PRICES

SPECIAL LINES IN DEMAND. SHORT YARDING OF BEEF. Wellington, Feb. 20. At Johnsonville to-day Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., offered a large yarding of sheep and lambs and an average yarding of cattle. Prime heavy bullocks met keen competition with no alteration in prices and prime medium-weights sold well at late rates. Owing to a short yarding of ox beef there was a good demand for cows and heifers, prices being firmer to the extent of 5s per head for heavyweight cattle. Vealers met a keen sale. There was little demand for wethers, only well-finished sheep being sought after; plain and unfinished sorts were not wanted. Heavy ewes sold well at late rates, light and plain sheep being hard to quit. The lambs were of mixed quality; prime heavyweights met with good competition, while plain and lightweight lambs were hard to sell. The entry of 20,000 store sheep made rates on a par with the recent ewe fair on the good lines of ewes, inferior sorts being somewhat easier.
