MAY BE IRISH ALIENS

SHAW AND ARCHBISHOP MANNIX. BILL DISCUSSED IN THE DAIL. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Dublin, Feb. 15. In the Dail Mr. MacDermott, United Ireland Party, condemned the Aliens Bill, declaring that it labelled the kith and kin of various parts of the British Commonwealth as aliens. Mr. Costello, formerly Attorney-Gen-eral, said that under the Bill Archbishop Mannix and Bernard Shaw could be aliens. Mr. de Valera said there was nothing to prevent them remaining Irish citizens. If born in the Free State they were entitled under the Nationality Bill to be regarded as citizens. The Bill passed the second reading by 53 votes to 37. Mr. de Valera when interviewed said: ‘ Mr. J. H .Thomas’ statement brings back the position of 1932. I agree it is no use bunding ourselves to the facts and accordingly I bring to Mr. Thomas’ notice the most vital fact—that history for 750 years has proved that the Irish will not for any consideration abandon the right to determine their own destiny and choose their political institutions. They desire to judge the extent to which they will associate and co-operate with other nations.”
