JURORS FOR STAGE

SEQUEL TO HAUPTMANN TRIAL. OFFER TO ENTER VAUDEVILLE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright New York, Feb. 17. The eight men and four women composing the Hauptmann jury held a meeting on Sunday to consider theatrical agents’ offer for vaudeville appearances. "Our shows will be very dignified, but we all need the money,” said one juror.

Jane: What’s wrong with Don tonight, he’s usually the life of the party. Has he lost his voice or something? Jess: As a matter of fact he has a bad throat, and if he even talks he starts to cough. Jane: Oh, I’ll fix that. A dose or two of Baxter’s Lung Preserver and he’ll be “crooning like Bing Crosby” again. “Baxter’s” certainly is marvellous. Banishes soreness and huskiness immediately. But be sure it is “Baxter’s.” Obtainable everywhere the popular 1/6, 2/6 and 4/6 bottles.

PUNGAREHU SCHOOL MEETING OF COMMITTEE. HERBERT SMITH SWIMMING CUP. At a meeting of the Pungarehu school committee there were present Messrs H. Gilhooly (chairman), J. W. Priest, S. Armstrong, A. Alcock and T. Rua. The headmaster reported that the roll was 131, which meant that the rooms were fully taxed, though the new room occupied by standards 1 and 2 was appreciated. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at Kawaroa Park, New Plymouth, on March 1. It was hoped to have paths tar-sealed as soon as possible. The school was closing at 12.30 p.m. and much of the afternoon was being devoted to the teaching of swimming. About 75 per cent, of the pupils could swim. On Saturday the pupils were taken to the Warea Domain, where swimming for the Herbert Smith Cup was held, some very fine efforts being witnessed. There were 18 girl and 18 boy competitors. Heats were won by Rita Symon, Elsie Rookes and Lizzie Ririkore. Rita Symon won the final in fine style. In a competition for smaller competitors Jean Watson was the winner, the distance being 50 yards. Boys’ heats were won by Maru Kira (inches from Joe Tamakaha, who made a rather unlucky beginning), Billy Kirkwood, with George Komene finishing close behind second, Ken Stockman and Jimmy Rangitawa (Stanley Ririkore a close second). The final was won by Maru Kira, who was closely pursued by Billy Kirkwood. Both of them covered the distance in fast time. The children thoroughly enjoyed the outing and have been further encouraged to prepare for next year’s competitions. A junior swim for the younger boys was won by Rangi Rongomai.

Transport was provided for the children by Messrs E. H. Gray, J. W. Priest, A. Roots, E. Poole, H. Gilhooly, and T. Rua. Miss Cooper accompanied the girls.
