HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL

PRESENT ROLL TOTALS 335. CLASS ACCOMMODATION TAXED. The school roll at present totalled 335, an increase of 10 over the total for the corresponding time last year, reported the principal (Mr. J. Dash) to Monday night’s meeting of the Hawera Technical High School Board of Managers. New pupils totalled 124, of whom all but two were commencing their post-primary education.

The numbers taking the courses were: Professional, girls 55, boys 92, total 147; commercial, girls 68, boys 30, total 98; home science, girls 25; engineering, boys 47; agriculture and dairy science, boys 18. There were 124 first-year pupils, 102 second year, 58 third year, 42 fourth year and 9 fifth year. . The new desks secured with the assistance of a grant from the department were in position prior to the opening of the school. With the exception of the physics laboratory all the rooms had a satisfactory complement of seating accommodation. An amended time-table had been introduced for summer conditions permitting of lengthened intervals and of earlier closing of afternoon school. The task of accommodating the classes had reached a point where specialised space, the kitchen and the workshop, had to be used occasionally as normal class-room accommodation. It was desirable that the board should give early consideration to the school’s demand for increased accommodation. The year’s distribution of numbers had necessitated marked alteration in the classes available for woodwork, and a slight decrease in the demands made on the instructor’s time. The borough council had granted the school the use of the baths for the annual swimming sports on Friday next. To restrict as little as possible the general public’s privileges for that afternoon the •sports would consist of a morning period followed by an afternoon period concluding at 3.30.

Mr. Dash said that in view of the pronouncement of the Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, that class-room accommodation came before boarding accommodation, the tune seemed opportune for the board to take stock of the position. The board might apply for additional accommodation. The masters room had been used for years as a class room and classes were being taught in the engineering workshop. The grounds and buildings committee was instructed to prepare a report. The purchase of dairy science equipment to the value of about £BO was referred to the equipment committee, with power to act. The Egmont A. and P. Association agreed to the use of its grounds for a military camp.

The school received £1 from the Post Office Savings Bank for its library fund in recognition of the establishment of a school bank.

Miss M. A. Bates was appointed a parttime instructor in arts and crafts. Mr. J. W. Harding presided over a full attendance. MOKOIA WINS AT TENNIS. ALTON CLUB BEATEN.
