COMBINED PICNIC

FRASER AND ROTOKARE SCHOOLS. PLEASANT DAY’S OUTING. Owing to the uncertainty of the weather the venue of the combined picnic of the Fraser Road and Rotokare schools was altered, the gathering being held on Mr. L. A. Jennings’ property where more shelter was available if needed. However, the weather was good and an enjoyable day was spent by the large number of children and adults. In the morning the children were engaged in a competition for the collection of the greatest number of flowers of any kind in the paddock in which the picnic was held. As the paddock had been closely grazed by sheep it was rather remarkable that the winner, W. Moller, found 20 varieties of flowers. There were several other competitors only one behind his total. Johnson. The Stratford Cycle Club asked permission to hold, cycle races on Victoria Park on Monday and Friday evenings. This was granted. St. Mary’s Sunday school, New Plymouth, was given permission to hold a picnic at King Edward Park on Saturday, March 2. The Windsor Park Society asked the council to press for the inclusion. of Stratford in the tour of the incoming Governor-General so that he might attend an Arbor Day ceremony at the park. Arbor Day could be made to correspond with the visit. The society, said Dr. W. P. P- Gordon, wished to give the Governor-General an objective during his visit to Stratford and to bring the park under the notice of the townspeople. It was hoped that the Governor might plant a tree to mark his visit.

“We have always wanted to acknowledge Arbor Day and this suggestion would be particularly suitable,” the Mayor said. The request was granted. Mr. A. H. Nelson submitted the plan for a bandstand in King Edward Park. Dr. Gordon wondered if the band would want the rotunda in Victoria Park repaired after one was provided at King Edward Park. The incoming board was recommended to build the stand. In the meantime the band will be consulted as to which site it prefers. A general tidying up of the parks was done in for the visit of the Grenadier Band and the holiday period, reported the curator, Mr. E. P. Blanchard.
