BREAKING AND THEFT
RELIEF WORKERS CHARGED.
NEEDED FOOD FOR FAMILIES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Eight charges of breaking and entering dwelling houses and committing theft were preferred in the Magistrate’s Court to-day against Walter Albert Speer, aged 24, and Walter Bell, aged 30. The value of the stolen property according to the estimates of witnesses was about £650 and the total value of the goods recovered was about £l5O.
Both accused had made statements to the police, admitting the offences. They said they were on relief work, hard up and in need of food and clothing for their wives and -hildren. They pleaded guilty and were committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
