FREE MILK IN SCHOOL
GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY SOUGHT. DEPUTATION BEFORE MINISTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A request that the Government should contribute half the cost of supplying free milk to all school children in the Dominion was placed before the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, to-day by a large deputation of persons interested in child welfare. It was stated that the estimated cost would vary from £135,000 to £168,000 a year. In reply the Minister said he realised the value of milk to children, and he was sympathetic to the scheme. He pointed out, however, that hospital boards, the Unemployment Board and the Government would be contributing 70 per cent, of the cost. “I am not in a position to promise a subsidy,” said the Minister, “but I shall be pleased to look into your proposals sympathetically.”
