HAWERA

Mrs. A. G. Irvine has returned from a holiday in the Auckland district. Mrs. Baker returned from Palmerston North last week. Mrs. Hall’s guest, Miss Atkins, returned to Hunterville last week. Mrs. MacPherson and Miss Oliver returned to Paraparaumu last week. Mrs. H. R. Kemp was hostess at bridge on Friday evening. Mrs. John Stewart, who has been holidaying at Wellington, has returned. Mrs. R. H. Leece, who was visiting Wanganui friends, has returned home. Mrs. T. M. Ellis is visiting relatives and friends at Nelson. Mrs. L. A. Ablett left on Monday evening on a brief visit to Rotorua. Mrs. Walker and Miss Causey have returned from the Wairarapa.

Mrs. F. W. Horner returned from Wellington last week-end. Mrs. John Plimmer, Wellington, has been staying with her sister, Mrs. H. H. Bramwell.

Mrs. Stewart is spending some weeks at Palmerston North, where she is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. H. Allen. Mrs. H. M. Caseiberg motored home from Wellington via the Wairarapa during the week-end. Mrs. Moorhouse is spending a few weeks with her daughter in the Auckland district.

Miss Hunter, matron of the Hawera hospital, is spending a few weeks holiday at Christchurch. Mrs. Laird has returned from her Auckland visit and is staying with her mother, Mrs. W. M. Thomson, prior to returning to Wellington.

Mrs. Vincent, Christchurch, who has been staying with her daughter, Mrs. J. Houston, at Hawera, leaves on her return south this week.

Mrs. R. S. Black, Wellington, who has been spending some months with her daughter, Mrs. A. W. Wilson, Dives Avenue, returned last week-end. Mrs. G. A. Duncan left last Wednesday for Wellington, where she underwent an operation in a private hospital. She is now progressing well and hopes to return next week.

Miss Muriel Strange left for Tauranga early in the week to join her toother, Mrs. W. G. Strange, and Miss Taylor on a fortnight’s camping holiday. Mrs. Strange and Miss Taylor have been enjoying Tauranga for a fortnight. Before leaving for Wellington on Friday, Miss Small was farewelled by a number of members of the Red Cross Society, and was the recipient of a floral token. Mrs. H. Jenkins was also the guest of honour on Saturday evening, when Mrs. R. A. Harvey, Glover Road, was hostess at two tables of bridge. The hostess received her guests wearing a smart frock of air force blue flat crepe. The list of subscriptions and donations acknowledged at last weeks meeting of the Hawera branch of the Plunket Society included 5s each from Mesdames McGlade, R. A. Harvey, Kidd, Haseltine, R. Henderson, Sutton and J. Carter, 10s from Miss Buchanan, and a car donation of 2s 6d from Mrs. M. Blackman.

On Wednesday evening, Mrs. J. Ogle was hostess at a jolly evening's bridge at her Ohawe beach cottage for Mr. and Mrs. H. Jenkins, who leave shortly to take up residence at Tauranga. The hostess wore a smart gown of black silk moss crepe. The guest of honour, Mrs. Jenkins, chose an attractive frock in a lido blue tone. The highest scores were won by Mr. R. Gosnell and Mrs. Stead. Among those present were Mesdames L. B. Lewis, R. Gosnell, N. F. Stead and R. A. Harvey.

Th 3 party of officials, Guiders and Guides from South Taranaki, which leaves on Friday to take part in the Wellington rally for the Chief Guide, Lady Baden-Powell, includes the divisional commissioner. Mrs. John Houston, Captains Cook (Opunake) and M. Mackie (Otakeho), Lieutenant Nicholls (Otakeho), Brown Owl N. Christie (Manaia), Tawny Owl B. Hobday (Manaia), Captain P. Lennon (Hawera), Lieutenant B. Woods (Hawera), Captain I. Gibbs (Alton) and Captain Prescott (Patea), and a large company of Guides. At the rally Lady Baden-Powell’s two “Guide” daughters will also be present.

Wearing a lace gown in smart brown and peach beige tonings, Mrs. Welsh was hostess at a delightful tea on Saturday afternoon in Mrs| W. A. O’Callaghan s honour. Mrs. O’Callaghan s smart summer suit was fashioned in a navy crepe silk spotted in white, with a light white touch at the neckline, and she wore a hat of fine navy straw. After tea the guests were invited into the hostess garden Those present included Mesdames A. Coleman, W. J. Bright, C. Bayley, C. E. Parrington, W. O. Williams, C. J Hawken, and Misses McLean, M. and B. Corry, G. White, K. Coleman, M. Hawken and L. Dingle.

Last Thursday evening committee members of the Hawera branch of the Voluntary Aid Division arranged a picnic at the Ohawe beach in order that members should meet Miss N. Thomas, the newly-appointed Red Cross nurse. Leaving town at 5.30 p.m. a swim was enjoyed before partaking of a gipsy tea around a large bonfire after which all joined in community singing. Among those present were Mesdames S. R. Veitch, V. Warner, M. R. Jones, Ward, Sharp, E. Frisk and Misses D. Bryant, A. Carpenter, Nicholas, D. Hooper, B. Entwistle, D. Clement, E. Hunt, T. Banks, F. Best, A. Monaghan, V. Parsons and D. Donaghue.
