SMALL SPRINT FIELD

BUT PLENTY OF FORM Prior to Christmas Sanguine King had one of the most consistent records of any horse racing in the North Island this season. In six starts Sanguine King recorded four wins and two second placing®. As seven furlongs appears to be the Acre gelding’s pet distance a prominent showing can be anticipated from him in the Flying Handicap at Hawera to-day.

British Columbia is not always reliable, but he has prevously shown a penchant for the Hawera course, and he has some good performances to his credit this sea-' son among the leading Northern sprinters. When short of racing Ruri ran surprisingly well at New Plymouth last week, and he should have derived a lot of benefit as the result of that outing. Hunt the Slipper is another who should be all the better for his New, Plymouth racing, and his second to Illuminate on the concluding day showed that he is fast coming back to form. At his best Hunt the Slipper has quite a lot of speed. At the Wairarapa fixture on New Year’s Day Navaho was good enough to beat such a speedy sort as Souchong. The Rangitiro gelding is a good deal better than most sportsmen realise, and he may need to be respected at Egmont. After just going under to Rust in the Mimi Highweight the first day at New Plymouth Full Throttle made no race of the Omata hack sprint on the concluding day. Full Throttle is obviously a galloper worth watching, and he looks quite capable of holding his own in open company.
