The international triangular tennis tournament between Europe, South Africa and Australia was commenced on Saturday in humid weather. Surprise features were Crawford's defeat by Menzel and the youthful Brom- . wich’s convincing victories over Maier and Kirby. The latter was, however, handicapped by an injured finger. Results were:— Singles: McGrath (Australia) beat k Maier (Spain), 7—5, 6—4; Crawford (AusI tralia) beat Stefani (Italy). 6—l, 6—4; Bromwich (Australia) beat Malcolm (South Africa), 5-7. 6-2, 6-4; Bromwich beat Maier, 6—2, 7—5; Bromwich beat Kirby (South Africa), 6-0, 6—2;. McGrath beat Stefani, 4 —6, 6—3, 7—5; Menzel (Czechoslovakia) beat Crawford, B—6, o—6, B—6. Doubles: Menzel and Maier beat Kirby and Stefani. 6-3. 6-0, 6-4; Crawford and McGrath beat Maier and Menzel, 2—6, 6—3, 6—3, B—6. Africa had only two players, so Stefani partnered Kirby in the doubles. ,
