RED SUN BRILLIANT WELLINGTON CUP TRIAL TRENTHAM TRACK GALLOPS. PRINCESS DOREEN’S HALF-MILE. By Telegraph—Press Association. * Wellington, Jan. 19. The rain that has been threatening for the past week finally began to fall last evening, and although the first of it did not start to come down at Trentham till later than in the city it had set in steadily by the time galloping commenced this morning. It continued throughout the forenoon. The plough soon became wet on top and the grass tracks will benefit immensely.

The going on the plough was still fairly fast, though slowing up as the work progressed, but the rate on the grass was not appreciably affected. Most of the galloping was done on the plough. A few visiting .horses arrived during. the course of yesterday and more visitors were due on the scene to-day. If the rain is not too severe the outside of the course proper will be opened for trials to-morrow and on Monday. There was a sensation early when Red Sun completely buried the better fancied Cup candidate Cuddle for brilliance over the closing section of seven furlongs on the plough and finished running away three lengths in front. The pair ran together for the first half-mile, which they ran in 50s, but then Red Sun asserted his superiority to forge clear and complete the distance in Im 29 3-ss. Cuddle may not be an exceptional worker on the plough, but there could be no questioning the merit of Red Sun’s performance. Both horses carried about the same weight, Flower being on Cuddle and Wilson on Red Sun. Sunee ran half a mile alone in 50 3-ss. Autopay, breaking away the correct way round for a change, sprinted, three furlongs up the back in 375, and was then eased off. Dark Red finished on better than Nightlass over five furlongs in Im 6 2-ss, the last half-mile in 52 2-ss. Verden beat San’s Foy over an easy six furlongs and the hurdler Diamond ran an easy seven furlongs. The grass was used by a few horses. Orby’s Last finished attractively in beating Shirley Dene by three lengths over half a mile in 48 4-ss. ~ , ~ Fulojoy. and the Siegfreid—Left colt were together at the end of half a mile in 49 l-ss. Fulojoy was under suspicion for a cold early in the week, but now appears to have thrown off the trouble. . . Princess Doreen dipped over six furlongs in Im 16s, speeding up over the final half-mile to record 49 3-5 s for this section. , Going Gay and Debham Were both stopping at the end of five in Im 7is, being troubled by the greasy track. Palatinate while doing three-quarter pace work fell over a trestle, but apparently he suffered no hurt, as he came out' half an hour later and completed his Travenna, Namakia, Galilee, Lucidus and Sunny Maid did serviceable work. Salt Spray was exercised as usual on the lead.
