MATAPU SCHOOL.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At the last meeting of the Matapu school committee there were present Messrs. A. J. Prestidge (chairman), H. Riddick, L. Cleaver, W. T. Seed (secretary), W. H. Stevenson (head teacher). A deputation of women waited on the committee with a report of the recent garden party, when the sum of over £l3 was handed over. A vote of thanks was passed to the women. It was decided to hold the annual picnic at Opunake beach early in February. It was left with Mr. Stevenson to get lists out before-school opened and the secretary is to arrange with the Railway Department. The mowing of the lawns was left with Messrs.. Cleaver and Riddick. For the period ending December 20 the roll was 103 against 98 for the corresponding period last year, it was reported. During the term five pupils were admitted and nine withdrawn. For the past few weeks the attendance had been affected by influenza. The number of children who made the possible attendance was six, all of whom received a prize. A good standard of work was maintained at the completion of the annual examination and the percentage of failures for promotion was small. Several inter-school cricket and tennis matches were played. . A short concert was given by the pupils on break-up day. . During the period the school was 'painted. The lawns were kept cut by the boys, thus causing a loss of time for actual school work. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Seed and their two daughters motored through to Palmerston North to attend the Ellery-Gould wedding. Mr. and Mrs. S. Vaughan and family, Wellington, are staying with Mr. and Mrs. R. Gpy. Mr. and Mrs. MacGregor,. Miss MacGregor, Invercargill, have returned home after staying with Mr. . and Mrs. R. Hooker. Mr. H. Eliason, Kapuni, met with a painful accident a few days ago. While descending a ladder, he missed his footing and fell on to a waggon below, breaking three ribs. His condition is. improving. SALVATIONISTS WELCOMED. ADJUTANT AND MRS. HAWKES. Adjutant and Mrs. W. L. Hawkes were welcomed at the Hawera Salvation ~inny hall by a large gathering of Salvationists and friends on Thursday evening. Mr. J. E. Campbell, who was unavoidably absent, conveyed the wish that the Adjutant and his wife would have an enjoyable time in Hawera. There were not many of the main stations of New Zealand at which Adjutant and Mrs. W. L. Hawkes had not resided, and they were known throughout the country for their good and tireless work. They had been in Taranaki before, being stationed at Stratford and Eltharn, and in recent years had carried out excellent work at Wanganui. Adjutant Hawkes was a keen and well-known student of the Bible and he had great oratory powers. Mr. T. J. Hurrell, representing the Methodist congregation, welcomed the Adjutant to the Ministers’ Association. Mrs. Hawkes thanked the corps for its warm welcomes and Adjutant Hawkes said he looked forward to his association with the ministers of the Hawera churches. PATEA R.S.A. MEMBERSHIP EXCEEDS 100. Increases of membership bringing the total up to 102 were reported by the president, Dr. W. T. Simmons, at the quarterly meeting of the Patea Returned Soldiers’ Association on Thursday. A welcome was extended to new members. The Patea Municipal Band was granted a donation of £1 Is and the hope expressed that it would be present at the association’s picnic in the domain;
