NEW SCHOOL OPENED
METROPOLITAN’S APPEARANCE. FIRST SINCE HIS ELEVATION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Westport, Last Night. Archbishop O’Shea, in making his first official appearance in public as Metropolitan of New Zealand in succession to the late Archbishop Redwood, opened and blessed the new Roman Catholic school at Westport this afternoon in the presence of a large assemblage of the public. The archbishop was escorted from the presbytery to the new school by Children of Mary, members of the Hibernian Society and school children. In the course of his address, the archbishop expressed the view that secular schools should be subsidised. Speakers included Father Phelan, parish priest, who mentioned that this was the second Catholic school opened at Westport at a cost of £7OOO. The cost of the present building of six rooms, one of the most up-to-date in the Dominion, was £2500. It was being opened almost free of debt. Mention was made by one of the speakers that Father Phelan had himself contributed £lOOO. Other speakers were the Mayor (Mr. J. Kilkenny), Mr. P. C. Webb, M.P., the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, Mr. J. Radford and Father Seymour.
