NEW RELIEF SCALE
PAYMENTS TO RELIEF WORKERS. IN OPERATION FROM MONDAY. Registered relief workers throughout the country who have had two weeks off work during the holiday period will resume operations next week, when the revised rates announced by the Minister of Employment (the Hon. J. A. Young) on December 11 will operate. The unemployment situation has not altered during the last two weeks, as all the men on relief works were: provided for when the Christmas payments were made. The revised rates for scheme "No; 5 and sustenance relief announced by the Minister provide for slightly higher allocations than those obtaining during 1934, and it is estimated that the increased cost to the fund will be approximately £175,000 per annum. During the coming year there will be only four varying scales of allocations. Broadly speaking, the highest scale will apply to the four main centres and adjoining boroughs; the second to the secondary cities and larger towns; the third to the smaller towns; and the fourth to the country areas. The gap between the city scale and the country scale will be reduced, and as far as children are concerned the rates will be brought up to the maximum provided for in the Unemployment Aet, 1930.
