CATHEDRAL’S LOST PANELS
FIFTEENTH CENTURY GLASS FOUND IN LONDON yyiiEN, in 1898, a flew stained glass window was placed in the Lady Chapel of Winchester Cathedral to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, several panels of 15th century glass were removed. Twenty years later they had vanished. Now what are believed to be four of them have come to light again. The panels were found in London, and the Abbey of Christ the King, New Barnett, Hertfordshire, has acquired them for its Folk Park and Museum. One of them contains a sort of problem picture. It depicts a “demon-beast” with a head like an ape’s and a sheep’s body. The beast has the wings of an angel and a golden halo—a fact which greatly puzzles experts be-cause'“demon-beasts” were almost
invariably depicted with fiery-eyed halos matching their general baleful appearance. The Winchester panels were made by order of Elizabeth of York," wife of Henry VII and mother of Henry VIII. The Abbey has also come into possession of two panels containing very rare 13th century glass, in which may be seen the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire.
