OAKURA SCHOOL

END-OF-YEAR CONCERT. ITEMS BY THE CHILDREN. The Oakura hall presented a festive appearance on Wednesday night for the break-up of the Oakura school. In the centre of the hall stood a Christmas tree gaily decorated with balloons and toys. There was a very good attendance. Items by the pupils were much appreciated. The programme, which began with a maze, was as follows: Pianoforte solo, Sylvia Price; recitation, Doreen Blakeley; clapping song, juniors, recitation, Gordon Shirley; military two-step; dialogue, “Noughts and Crosses,” Pat Thomas, Jean Cochran, Royce Price; Gay Gordons; gavotte Tansie Drake and Mavis Jury ; song, seniors; recitation, Nora Bell; recitation, Jack Hau and Gordon Shirley; dialogue, “The Old Arm Chair,” Nola Jury, Maisie Drake and Peggy Beale; recitations, Don Smith and Ruth Beale. At the conclusion of the concert rather Christmas arrived and, with the assistance of Mrs. Tills and Miss C. Greatbatch, presented each child with a bag of sweets and a present from the Christmas tree. Miss Greatbatch and Mr. and Mrs. Tills were given a present by b ather Christmas. , The chairman, Mr. D. Harvey, thanked the teachers, Mrs. Tills, Mrs. Beale and Mrs. Harris, for their efforts in making the concert a success. Mr. A. Drake complimented the headmaster on the success of three standard six girls (Sylvia Price and Tansy and Maisie Drake), who gained their proficiency certificates. Music for dancing was played by Mr. F Boulton. Mr. D. Harvey was master of ceremonies. Supper was in charge of Mesdames Tills, Morris, Jury, Hughes, Harvey, Shirley and Miss Greatbatch. A leg of mutton given by Mr. E. Andrews was won by Mr. A. Drake. An iced cake was won by Mr. Tills. Tennis Ladder.

Grey beat Miss V Price 7—3, Miss M. Goodwin beat' Miss R.’ Goodwin 7-0, Miss J. Hoby lost to Miss S. Thomas 3—7, Miss R. Goodjwin lost 5 to Miss M. Hoby 6—7, Miss J. Hoby lost to Mrs. Hau 6—7, Miss I- C°£bett beat Miss M. Goodwin 7—6, Miss S. Thomas beat Miss N. Hoby 7—3, Miss R. Goodwin beat Mrs. Hau 7 6. Personal Items.

Mrs. J. Jans has returned to Oakura after spending five weeks in the New Plymouth hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Auckland, . are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. D. Harvey. Miss Doris Jury is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Wheeler, Durham Road, Inglewood. , , , Mr. and Mrs. Tills and family left by car on Friday morning for Auckland. Master Harold Beale is spending the Christmas holidays with his parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Bell have returned from the Bluff, where Mr. Bell judged at the shows. x
