The Hon. S. G. Smith, Minister of Education, returned to New Plymouth last night. He was accompanied by his secretary, Mr. W. I. Deavoll, who is staying at the Criterion Hotel. Mr. James S. Middleton, former assist-ant-secretary, succeeds Mr. Arthur Henderson as secretary of the British Labour Party, says a London cable. The death has occurred of Mr. George Ayling, oar-maker, Thames, well-known throughout the world, says a London cable. The death occurred at New York on Thursday of Captain John Wanamaker, aged 45, states a cable. He was a son of the late Mr. Rodman Wanamaker and a grandson of Mr. John Wanamaker, famour New York and Philadelphia merchants. It was announced in the British House of Commons on Thursday that in succession to Sir Andrew Duncan, on his appointment as independent chairman of the British Iron and Steel Federation, Sir Archibald Page, general manager of the Central Electricit. Board, had been appointed chairman of the board.
